rainbow stairs?

I really fancy tearing up the hideous staors and landing carpet and painting a rainbow, what do you think? would it look awful?

I've only seen it done in magazines and it looks great provided you get your component colours spot on, the painting is perfect and the surrounding colours on walls etc are plain to non-existent e.g.. white. Google rainbow stairs images and there is a really good example (with glass balustrade) where the nose of each step has been pointed white. It is very crisp and modern and avoids looking like a 70sccommunity centre...

I was thinking varnish the wood on top of the step and paint the face bit, walls are white in stair well banister is plain wood. Thinking quite muted colurs so almost pastely rather than brights iyswim. would have to get all the colours from the smae range I guess so it would go.

You may well find a tester pot is enough for one step, so it won't cost much...

And of course, the good thing about painted stairs is that, if you change your mind, you can just re-carpet them!

I think painting the risers could work but the top of the step also need to be painted - preferably white. Doing it with varnished footer doesn't work, imo, there'd be too much going on.

ok so complete white gloss, what about the floor on the landing then would that be white as well? actually I can picture that, the stairs are quite dark which is why the walls are white (I dont do white)

so how easy is it to pull the carpet up and get all the spikey bits off the floor and stuff?

It sounds wonderufl, I have seen lots of examples of rainbow stairs on Pinterest and would certainly do it myself if we didn't live in a flat.

The key is to have the surrounding walls white and other woodwork white or natural.

Go for it, please do! Too many people's houses are boring and safe. If you like it, who cares what other people think?

dh isnt sure about leaving vases in the middle of the stiarcase, thinks it might be a hazard.

I saw a great set on Pinterest that had all different shades of blue, with the top of each step painted white. Gorgeous.

there is a really nice one on pinterest that is a really pale aqua up the middle with white edges and tops. dh sais I dont know I like carpet oon the stiars so I used the argument I had just been given and he agreed if we just get a new carpet we will wonder hat it would have looked like but we can easily cover with carpet.

It's easy pulling up carpet and to get rid of the grippers you just need a large flat-head screwdriver to lever them up. Do it and then post a picture.

dh has agreed so need to do serious planning now. this is going to be such a fun project.

I love this idea. Our stairs need doing anyway, we've already ripped up the carpet.

DH says no to multi coloured, but maybe to shades of the same colour.

I really like the wall paper on the stairs look. You could always do in rainbow colours or in similar colour ones but different patterns/ textures

I'm going to do something like this when we can afford to put down wood floors everywhere in the house.

carppet is up, stairs look better already, and the landing carpet is a seperate piece so I can just leave that for now and do the stairs.

first coat of rainbow done, looks a bit shabby at the moment, need second coat then the white gloss.

Where have you bought the paint from?

B&Q its there own range, they had a funky colours one but that was really bright we have gone for a slightly more muted colour. think anyone walking past us would have assumed madness as we were lining up rainbows of tester pots next to each other. only doing the colour on the upright bit and going to paint top white gloss.
