I really fancy tearing up the hideous staors and landing carpet and painting a rainbow, what do you think? would it look awful?

cab you link a pic when it's done please? Has it been a faff to do?

ditavonteesed · 06/05/2013 18:14

its took me about an hour, just letting the first coat dry then tackle it again, the hardest job so far was getting the spiky carpet grips up, plus there are some nails and staples that I still need to remove.

Did you use emulsion or gloss for the coloured bits? an eggshell matt might be nice, I'm thinking high gloss might be a bit over whelming....

ditavonteesed · 06/05/2013 18:20

matt emulsion, I agree about the a bit much, plus we couldnt find enough colours in the same range in glos, we decided every colour needed to be from the same range so the tone is right iyswim.

I can try and get a half done pic if you like.

oooh, yes please.

I think we might go with the three shades of blue. We're by the seaside, and have blue in our living room so it would tie in.

ditavonteesed · 06/05/2013 18:30

think they should be on profile now, it will look better though it looks ery scabby at the moment.

that looks great so far. definitely need to paint the tops white.

you might find emulsion not very hard weating but you c ould use clear varnish.

lalalonglegs · 06/05/2013 19:44

Wow, I like a woman with the courage of her convictions, you were only considering it this morning and now it's done. Great toning of colours.

ditavonteesed · 06/05/2013 19:48

definatly going to gloss the tops, all down the side where the carpet was has a navy blue line as the gloss before we moved here was blue so it needs to tidy it all up. looks scruffy at the moment but I can definatly see the potential. lala I do get myself on a mission when I get an idea stuck in my head, often regret it though dont think I will this one. The prep is key and the condition of the stairs and your patience and skill

UniqueAndAmazing · 06/05/2013 19:58

you should be able to sand off any excess blue then undercoat and gloss.

ditavonteesed · 06/05/2013 20:04

sanding is tommorows job cant do it until the emulsion dry as I dont want the dust sticking. also a couple of the colours need a third coat.

I'm Envy
Our stair carpet has seen better days and I'd love to do that.

Unfortunately the stairs go straight past the DDs bedrooms, without carpet I'd wake DD1 up for sure.

I've seen multi coloured vertical striped stair runners and have thought those would work here.

ditavonteesed · 07/05/2013 08:17

today I need to sand, the edges are going to be white gloss like a stair runner and the middle of the steps waxed. I sense a day of very hard work ahead.

Wow wow wow ditavonteesed, your stairs look amazing, I am so glad you did it!

lovemyscarf · 10/05/2013 12:17

Oh I love your rainbow stairs, my kids would adore having stairs like that, both seem obsessed with drawing rainbows at the moment! Am off to try and find some rainbow stairs to pin on Pinterest!
