Would you paint your interior doors black?

Looking through design magazines and on Houzz it seems to be the norm in the states. I haven't seen it in real life though. Has anyone done it?

I can only imagine it would work in a huge space with lots of light - in my teeny house it would make it look like I lived in a dungeon

She says 'my hallways have ZERO natural light, yet the first picture shows various windows above and in the main door, and then some more through the glass doors. And her hallway is the size of the footprint of my house.
So she's a bit disingenuous about how much light there is and she has a big house by our standards. Honestly I don't know anyone with a house that could take the dulling down of black doors.

I really like them after seeing that link! Wouldn't work in my tiny flat though.

I prefer the white ones in all her before and after pictures. ROFL at 'zero natural light'

I've just been on a couple more websites showing before and after pictures and I really like them. I'm just not sure I'm brave enough.

Our house has large rooms but we have lots of big trees so some of the rooms are quite dark.

I would imagine that once they are black they would need to be stripped properly if we decided the blak was too much and they had to be white again.

I like it, think black used on woodwork looks very smart and very "finished".
But I like dark paint colours generally.

I would've said no until I looked at the ones on your link, which do look smart - I really like them.

I think it looks great but then I' not sure if I'm loving the actual decor or the fact that it's a MASSIVE entrance hall... with a feature wall (only me loving the mirror wall? Not the green frames, mind)

Indeed, it would be a certain large home to take black/dark doors without them becoming oppressive.

Looks great elegant and finished but you do need that sort of scale for it to look that way. People are obsessed with light atm in interiors and it doesn't always look as good. Our whole house was white apart from one living room which I painted in F and B brinjal a very dark aubergine almost black and all my friends loved it as it was so nice at night with the fire on and candles lit. If you have the dimensions go for it it looks great

Point in case, the house we have just bought and are in the process of gutting/renovating had six doors into/out of the living room (one to utility, double doors to conservatory, double doors to kitchen, one to hall) and were in a dark wood.

THey are currently in the process of being primed, sanded, primed again, undercoated... two coats of whatever colour I finally decide on will go on this week. It's obvious, even with them all propped up again the walls whilst they are worked on that having them white changes the whole feel of the room.

I'm going to paint my internal cottage doors in a dark grey with black knobs. I love the look. However, the walls are all going to be some undetermined shade of white. Woodwork will be a lighter shade of grey than the doors. My house is not huge, but I think it will look nice when done (fingers crossed).

I painted my whole front room black.

Just had a nosy on your profile, tether - the walls I can see do look fab (and the artwork is wow!). How did you furnish/floor? More dark or contrast?

Walls dark are a different matter than doors, I think, though. Because I think doors can take on the feeling of a person when seen in your periphery.. hence me saying they would (to me, anyway) feel oppresive. Like a load of dudes watching over me in my own home. And not in a nice protective way.

This is coming from me, who was seriously weirded out by the Gormley Watcher installation in London.

I have painted our tv room/snug very dark brown and think it looks really good, esp at night as Noddy says.
But is is a big room and the ceiling and high skirting are pale.
I think dark is lovely but not ideal in small rooms, it can feel a little claustrophobic...

You'll be aghast, noddy, but it's a basement flat.

It's actually fairly light for a basement, but it's not huge and it really works. All our furniture is 1960s/70s and is quite bright, natural floors.

The bedroom is on the first floor and we've painted that very dark too- a sort of greeny-charcoal. I want to paint the woodwork in the same/slightly darker colour but a different finish- we have the original Victorian shutters on the windows. DP isn't sure, but I think it will work.

I quite like basements. I think trying to achieve the big light thing is not that easy in this country. I had a dark grey living room about 5 or 6 yrs ago but it as big.I had all the brighton mumsnet crew round for xmas think some of them thought it a bit grim
