Would you paint your interior doors black?

Looking through design magazines and on Houzz it seems to be the norm in the states. I haven't seen it in real life though. Has anyone done it?

I love the dark. As you say, trying to create a 'feeling of light' by painting all the walls of a tiny Victorian terrace white is a bit like nailing jelly to the wall Grin

Virgil · 17/11/2012 15:54

I think I might go for it. The house and rooms are well proportioned (picture on profile I think) and so hopefully it would work.

Will probably try it on one first just in case!

Virgil you might find a dark grey a bit easier to live with, just a thought, see the third pic in this link

I like that picture. Do you think it's dark grey or a satinwood black which looks black because of the way the light reflects? Either way I like the look. The more pictures I see the more persuaded I am.

Now convincing DH might be a different story of course!!

Its dark grey, it looks a bit like F&B Bue B;ack which I have used on fireplaces.
SOfter than true black and less dramatic.
HAving looked at the pic of your house I think it might fit better (judging just from the style of the house).
Can I ask when it was built?

Virgil · 17/11/2012 16:20

It was built in 1956 but i think it was last done up in about 1990 judging from the decor. We are in the process of trying to sort it out (after living with it for the past three years) but I'm nervous of making mistakes. It's a big house and I don't want to get it wrong!

If anyone has any views on an American style porch/veranda across the front of the house too then I'm still dithering with that decision so any input would be appreciated!

Can you tell I've been spending hours on Houzz. The American ideas are taking over.

Wow I was Hmm at the title of this thread but those pics are amazing. Mind you they all have immaculate paintwork on the walls, and it looks best with the stone / buff or blue-grey colours. And you do need great lighting, even if its not natural light.

Re the mirror wall, to me it just looks she's running a mirror shop!

noddyholder · 17/11/2012 16:31

I would Love a verandah

ATourchOfInsanity · 17/11/2012 16:36

I think it looks a bit 80's...

Pannacotta · 17/11/2012 16:53

I thought it looked 1950s.
In that case I would say to avoid black and try grey instead, black is probably more in keeping with period houses.

A verandah could work, it looks like there is lots of room for one and that there is plenty of space around the house.
WOuld you have it at the front or back and what aspects are both?

Virgil · 17/11/2012 16:59

Verandah at the front to soften it a bit. I feel like its a bit boxy.

The front faces north west and gets a bit of sun in the evening. We don't have neighbours since we live in a wood and so we could sit there even though its the front of the house.

It's more to soften the look of the house than for sitting purposes really though since there are lots of other lovely places to sit.

I have to paint our hallway and I'm going for a colour like this . The downstairs hall is all interior and squarish with dark wooden floors and a woodburner. The wall with the woodburner might be dark too, and the stair spindles, with the wall behind the spindles light.

Upstairs hall is a nroow corridor, but doesn't have a lot of doors facing each other. I'm going to be brave. It won't be painted until Easter so no pictures yet.

treesntrees · 17/11/2012 22:35

buy some large quantities of black paper or cheap fabric and pin onto a couple of doors to assess if you would like the effect.

Devora · 17/11/2012 22:49

I quite like it, but mainly I love her hallway and the contrast of the black with the white and buff colours. (Really hate the green mirrors, though.)

Agree with others that, (a) all your paintwork must be immaculate, (b) you need high ceilings and good dimensions, and (c) good light. So that's my gaff ruled out on all counts.

I think it would look even better in a very dark grey or olive or taupe.

Annianni · 17/11/2012 22:53

I think they look nice in those links.

I've recently stained our bathroom floor black (1930's house) and it looks great.
Everyone comments on the floor, dh was a bit Hmm when I first suggested it, but he loves it now.

treesntrees · 17/11/2012 23:11

try pinning cheap black fabric or black paper to a couple of doors to get an idea if you would like black doors

UnrequitedSkink · 17/11/2012 23:13

I especially like the doors with glass in them, they carry the black well and the glass makes it less oppressive. Any chance you could go for some framed glass internal doors OP?

I think, if it were me, I'd be inclined to keep the black doors downstairs and stick to white for bedrooms.

Devora · 17/11/2012 23:14

Sleek black doors = v nice

Tatty black doors = beyond horrid
