Striped stair carpets - what do you think?

We're doing our house up and thinking of putting striped carpet on the stairs and landing. Maybe like a cream and brown neutrals stripe.

I'm undecided - is this too fashionable at the moment and likely to date? What do you think of them?

I really like them. Think it's fairly classic so unlikely to date.

mrscumberbatch · 18/07/2012 21:44

I love it. My mum had cream and brown stripe and it looks amazing.

I don't think it's particularly 'in fashion'. It's just a personal taste. Very stylish imho.

I am miffed with my boring biscuit coloured carpet!

oreocrumbs · 18/07/2012 21:58

I love it too, I don't think its particuarly trendy, they have been croping up for years now. I think it is a classic look.

Yes, Roger Oates is fab. Be aware that price per linear metre for a 70cm wide runner is around £100 (before you fall in love!) Grin

emsyj · 18/07/2012 22:57

I really love them, but in a nice colour, not beige & brown.

Thanks everyone, I think we'll go for it. Will check out that website too (for inspiration).

Hi there, yes we have this on our stairs kersaintcobb hope that link works! We love it, much cheaper than Roger Oates too :)

bumbez · 20/07/2012 09:32

We put a red striped carpet on our stairs and neutral for the landing as too much stripe makes your eyes go funny. It's been down 4 years and looks as good as new. was difficult to match the walls though in the end painted them white with hint of pink.

My house is on rightmove at the moment so you can see the carpet. I don't know how to link but it's on with pittis estate agent Ryde Isle Of Wight priced 310 sstc.

In the next house I want to do a caramel stripe with duck egg blue walls I think, the stairs in that house are a hideous moss green colour!

Was expensive but well worth it - has helped sell my house got lots of comments :)

bumbez · 20/07/2012 09:33

Rightmove

Flossiechops · 20/07/2012 09:33

Woohoo it worked! We went for this one as it picks up the colours in the Minton tiles in our hall. We then chose an accent colour which matches the stipe to have across the landing. Everybody that comes into the house comments on how lovely it is as it hits you straight away, definitely better than the peach carpet we took out!

shhhgobacktosleep · 20/07/2012 09:41

We have striped carpet on our 2 flights of stairs and landings, similar to the one ponk linked to. They also did plain carpets in the colours of the striped range and we chose a light neutral one of those for all the bedrooms and they look lovely. Everyone comments on the carpets when visiting the house.
When choosing ours we looked at hundreds of stripes and there are some which look very modern and I think will date but we have gone with classic stripe which hopefully will prove timeless as it cost so bloody much

Oooh bumbez your house is pretty (Rightmove link is here by the way) Grin

I like stripey carpet too. Although it'll be a while till I get one, since it's WAY down the priority list for the shitheap we're about to buy....

VivaLeBeaver · 20/07/2012 18:01

Bumbez, love your carpet. It's exactly what I'd like.

Pooka · 20/07/2012 18:13

www.rogeroates.com/products/runners/multi-bright/moritz-multi/

We have this. Was £ but love it. Really tough and seemingly stain proof (2 years in). Have it as a runner to first floor, then neutral hall carpet and then runner again to second loft bedroom.

Ponders · 20/07/2012 18:33

I really really really want stripey stair carpet

but we have a single step up to the landing at the top of the stairs at right-angles to the rest

& I cannot imagine how we could do that without some stripes going in the wrong direction Sad

bumbez, I love your house Smile

Tansie · 20/07/2012 18:37

I'm not usually one for any pattern of a carpet (thinks: pub Grin) BUT stripes on stairs looks rather classy.

VivaLeBeaver · 20/07/2012 19:43

That Roger Oates one is lovely as well but when a carpet states "price on application" I suspect it's not good news.

Ponks · 20/07/2012 20:05

Ponders we have similar, the stripes along the landing had to be at 90 degrees to the landing because of it i.e. parallel to the short sides rather than the length of the landing. If you see what I mean. I was a bit Hmm about the idea of it but actually it still looks great.

Ponders · 20/07/2012 20:37

I think I see what you mean, Ponks Confused Grin

but our landing runs parallel to the stairs - it's just the one step up which is the wrong way round

the current carpet was laid so it turns over that step sideways on - the pattern does match, but the weave is bent the wrong way...

I suppose it might be simpler to do what others have said, lay a plain toning carpet along the landing & just have the stripes up the stairs?

CaipirinhasAllRound · 20/07/2012 20:42

we're looking for a striped runner or carpet at the moment too
ponks are the carpets on the link you posted megabucks/like Roger Oates?
