Striped stair carpets - what do you think?

We're doing our house up and thinking of putting striped carpet on the stairs and landing. Maybe like a cream and brown neutrals stripe.

I'm undecided - is this too fashionable at the moment and likely to date? What do you think of them?

Don't worry about angles - we have a right angle turn - carpet fitters are clever (but it does mean fitting is expensive).

Crucial Trading is another maker with lots of colourways- we have this at £24 pm in runner-width and I love it. The look probably will date a bit, but not for a long time (i hope).

What charitygirl said, we have a Crucial Trading stripe on our stairs with a half landing and turn, it looks great and looks literally brand new after 18 months. I too think it will date but hopefully not v soon. Buy it on t'interweb, get a local fitter, these will both bring the price down.

Charitygirl - where are you getting that carpet in £24 pm? I can't see it on that link..

We've got a stripy Roger Oates stair runner in orange hues on our stairs. I think it's worth paying a bit extra to make sure it's good quality as stairs take lots of traffic. Ours is down about three years and looking as good as day we bought it. We had sisal before that which I really loved but it wore away really quickly. If it was more durable, I'd probably go for the sisal again.

I love stripy stair carpets and had my heart set on one, but when I brought the sample home to our steep, narrow stairs it just looked silly. I was sooo disappointed. I reckon they look great usually, especially some of the brighter ones from Crucial Trading.

Runners are nice but are everywhere atm. Fitted cheap stripy stuff a la tv makeover shows looks horrible imo of course!this is gorgeous

I have a beautiful pale blue cream and beige striped wool carpet on my stairs. It is beautiful Smile

We have a cheap red multi coloured stripy runner on cream stairs. I bloody love it. Cost me £60 off eBay. Is wearing well and could be easily replaced if we wanted (which I don't, I want to hug it every time I go up the stairs Grin!)

Thanks everyone, I think I will go for one.

Bumbez, thanks for posting your rightmove link, your carpet and house are lovely.

Hi,
I know I'm a bit late joining this thread but am hoping to get a stripey runner for my stairs with a quarter landing and am really interested in hearing how people have done this. Charity girl - How did the fitters deal with your quarter landing?
Any info appreciated
Thanks

I looove Roger Oates but am saving it for when/if we end up in a house we're going to stay in for a long time. We have a cheaper version in current house - it's multi-coloured (mainly blues & greys) and it looks great and never looks dirty.

minipie · 10/09/2012 19:40

Flossie I bloody love that Kersaint Cobb collection. Trying to decide if I am brave enough... (we have a lot of stairs!)

Flossiechops · 10/09/2012 21:47

Thanks minipie tis gawjuss! It hits you as soon as you walk in and really stands out. It is as good as new 2 years later. Go for it you won't regret it Grin

minipie · 11/09/2012 13:42

You may have persuaded me Grin just need to redo the bathroom first (not having builders and plumbers mess up beautiful new stair carpet)
