is there such a thing as a comfy sofa bed?

I need a little sofa bed for my mum to sleep on, so I want it to be as comfy as possible. The only sofa beds I've ever slept on you could feel the metal bars through the mattress and they feel weird to sit on in sofa mode.

Futons are too hard/low.

So is 'comfy sofa bed' an oxymoron?

I know you say you don't want a futon but go into the futon shop and have a look at their 'oke' one. It comes with a choice of mattresses. We have this with the thick mattress and I can honestly say its incredibly comfy and not low at all

We looked really hard for ages for one for my old dad to sleep on when he came to visit.
Bought one from Ikea and returned it the next day, I think I had just been seduced by the prospect of sitting down whilst traipsing round the shop.

In the end we got one from a independent sofa shop. It was £700 (9 years ago) and is still good today. When you are sitting on it, you wouldn't know it was a sofa bed.

The secret is to get one that has a sprung mattress, not a foam one.

we put a memory foam topper on it (cheap from poundland), feels much more comfy that way.

Agree that a memory foam mattress/topper makes the world of difference!

I got mine from Laura Ashley for about £700 4 years ago and it is very comfy as both a sofa and sofabed - and is still looks good!

I am having this exact same issue (and have already posted about it!). I found a lovely comfortable one at Sofa Workshop but it's £1800...

John Lewis have some decent ones with proper mattresses.

I have this one by B&B Italia - it's really comfortable (but weighs a tonne)

ok, Laura Ashley, John Lewis and sofa workshop - though £1800 is a bit beyond budget!

I think the B&B Italia one is probably too fancy as it would be in the kids room for occasional use by granny or mates!

After owning various sofa beds/futons the Ikea Lycksele is the one we have now, not sure if that's the one CUP tried. They don't really look like a sofa but OK for spare room. The mattress is only foam but it's good and thick and the bed has sprung beech slats.

with a foam matress topper. My 71 year old mum sleeps on it for 2 weeks at a time and says it is very comfortable.

Meant to add, when it is a sofa the matress topper goes into the storage bit along with the duvet.

some of the sofa beds, instead of an expanding metal frame, have slabs of foam mattress that fold out. They won't squeak and are said to be more comfortable (but much lower, like putting a mattress on the floor)

I imagine they probably would be comfier, but whilst my mum is no Old Lady, I do wonder if she would struggle getting up out of a very low bed. (please don't show my mum this!

My problem is wanting one that's a comfortable sofa. Lots of sofa beds just aren't as nice to sit on as a normal sofa.

hmm... I'm now considering sofa.com but they're ££££.

Our family sofa is from them and we love it, but I doubt it's worth paying so much for an occasional use sofa bed. hmmmmm...

We got one from John Lewis for about £450. It is quite firm as a sofa, but with a cushion, very loungeable, and we have a memory foam topper for the bed version, which works very well to even out the hard-and-soft part of the mattress.

We have a JL Sacha sofa bed which is a brown leather corner sofa. It had RRP of £1,800 I think but we bought as a new second on eBay for £1k I think.
Super comfy and v easy to transform and has storage too.
I just searched for sofa beds and filtered for new on ebay and found the company that way.
Courier only took sofa to the front door tho' so had to beg neighbour's husband snd friend to come over at half time to shift it from our hallway as DH was away all that week. So it might be worth asking when you buy about how far delivery goes!

We have an Ikea Beddinge one with sprung mattresses. Not the prettiest, but very comfy.
