is there such a thing as a comfy sofa bed?

I need a little sofa bed for my mum to sleep on, so I want it to be as comfy as possible. The only sofa beds I've ever slept on you could feel the metal bars through the mattress and they feel weird to sit on in sofa mode.

Futons are too hard/low.

So is 'comfy sofa bed' an oxymoron?

I have this. It's not that pretty (leather look) but I presume you could get other fabrics. The design is click clack and it takes 5 secs to convert back and forth to a bed. It's a comfortable bed and sofa. I sleep on it a lot.

Moving in to current place with on the floor blow up bed (for me - DS had a real bed first obvs) I concur with memory foam toppers - frankly they could make me happy even on the floor.

Most sofa beds are only really suitable for occasional use and neither fish nor fowl. A topper makes it for me

IKEA Hagalund is brilliant, £375 new but usually available on ebay for ~£100. Improved by a topper but very impressive.

If trying them out in the shop get two of you laying on it ...

I stayed at my friends on a lovely comfy sofa bed, til DH turned up the next day and we spent all night squashed in the middle as it curved with the weight making it impossible to avoid each other!

We have this. It's reeeeeeeeeeaaaally comfortable.

You need to look for sofa beds for every day use. These are the only sofa bed type that stand up to regular use as a bed and a sofa. www.thesofabed.com is a good brand and has some excellent reviews.

We have this one from Ikea. It's only for occasional use but is comfortable. You can choose between three types of mattress to get the level of firmness you prefer iirc which is good.

Friend has an ikea corner sofa bed - you sleep on the actual sofa cushions - incredibly comfortable as a bed. Not sure what it's like as a sofa though.

Have you considered an aerobed? My parents have one and it's really good. Perhaps a better option than compromising on the sofa?

Do you need it to be a double bed? If a single would suffice another option might be more of a day bed, or a truckle bed under a DCs bed. These would allow you to use a standard single mattress and would be a more normal height. Futons can be very variable both the most comfy and least comfy sofa beds I've ever slept on have been futons (different ones obviously!). Our current sofa bed is a hand me down, so don't know what it cost. It's is a reylon and comfy as it has a proper mattress might go and buyer a topper though following people's tips up thread

We got a Laura Ashley sofa bed about 3years ago in the sale and I put a mattress topper it. It's comfy to sit on as a sofa and guests are often suprised by how comfy it is.

Mine is lovely - slept on it a lot when pregnant. It's from sofasofa.com (I think it's the Scala model)

I know this is a zombie thread but I recently stayed on my friends brand new next sofa bed with memory foam and it was really comfortable. Far more comfortable than my own bed actually with fancy expensive mattress. I am on the look out for a sofabed myself so will be checking out next and laura ashley - sadly I don't think any ikea ones will fit in our small sitting room.

Yonks ago I remember reading that a sofa bed was like shampoo with built-in conditioner, oxymoronic. The two functions cannot co-exist.

It would seem that you should go for tip-top sofa, because that's what you'd be using it for mostly, and a mattress topper. But then you'd have to store the topper.

Yes you can get comfy ones. My parents have recently bought one, I am not sure from where, but it has a sprung mattress rather than a foam one (foam ones are usually why you can feel the metal through it). They paid more for it, think it cost about £1k or just over, but it is definitely comfy :)

We have two single Ikea Lycksele sofa beds (shown here) and as a bed they are very comfortable indeed. We turned one of the bedrooms into a sitting room and whenever DD has a friend round for a sleepover they sleep on these.

They aren't as comfortable as a dedicated sofa, but they are sturdy and well made and are comfortable as a bed. I like a firm mattress, but you could put a mattress topper on if you need a softer mattress.

I bought them years ago, and they must be a good seller if they still stock them.

We had an ikea futon and it was sooo comfy, not hard at all. It was low, but not sure what you can do about that. It had wooden slats rather than metal poles and I think that made the difference.

DH and I were shagging once on a metal pole type sofabed and he missed and banged his knob into one of the poles. He was crying They really are uncomfortable

The message seems to be that a sofa bed is rather like shampoo/conditioner: antithetical concepts.

I bought a Sofa Workshop one 16 years ago - it came with a full-time use mattress and is still V comfy all these years later. Granted it got a lot of use in it's early years, not so much now.
