I went to look at beds with my 4 yo dd on Saturday, we're giving her bedroom a 'big girl' make-over. She's fallen in love with a metal framed day bed, they are very pretty, but i'm not convinced Hmm.

Will i end up selling it on ebay and buying an ordinary divan??

Tell me your experiences good and bad of day beds.

I loved mine, though was 7 years older when I got it! Just check she wont wedge her head in between bars etc. worst case scenario, you need to fashion a "bumper" that can stay on for a few years.

Thankyou Mousey.

Why not?

BIWI · 11/03/2012 16:57

Why wouldn't you? They are proper beds. Just check bars, as others have said.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 11/03/2012 16:58

left I just think they look more ornamental than comfy, i've never slept on a day bed, so wouldn't know. Have you had/got one?

DD has a day bed at my mums for when she stays. It's fine for them, but DD sometimes kicks the bars in her sleep.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 11/03/2012 17:09

That's the kind of thing i was a bit worried about Ishmeyes.

DS has had the Hemnes daybed from ikea since he was 3. I quite like that it's enclosed on 3 sides, meant he wasn't likely to fall down the back of the bed

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 11/03/2012 17:13

Does it really matter if she kicks the bars? It's no different to kicking the end of the bed if you have a foot end. Anyway, she'll soon get used to it and stop kicking it if she's sleeping in it everynight.

AdventureInKL · 11/03/2012 17:13

My 2yo has one. It's fine. :)

ThePathanKhansWitch · 11/03/2012 17:15

I think i'll get her one then Smile, and a good mattress. Thank you for your replies.

DD has one and it's fine it makes a fantastic climbing frame too.

HettyKett · 11/03/2012 17:17

yy always a decent mattress and some good full-coverage waterproofs.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 11/03/2012 17:18

Sorry meant to add, I think i'm a bit old fashioned, from the "good shoes and a good bed if your not in one your in the other" school, moneys a bit tight and i don't want to replace it til she leaves home for a few years. Thanks again.

We got the bed frame second hand and a new mattress. Theory being that if it's stood up to full use by one child it's decent quality and mine won't break it.

We have just bought the Hemnes daybed (but in brown) for DS1. He's 20 now, and previously had a loftbed, which is a bit young for him really! As he's at university, we want to make his room more of a living room IYSWIM.

It's really good - very solid and, most importantly, very comfortable.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 11/03/2012 17:25

The Ikea ones are lovely. The one she wants is the Amy day bed from Dreams, although i have seen a nice Ikea metal frame day bed on ebay.

The Hemnes is very comfortable. We quite often sleep on it with DS when we have DH's family over and have to give up our bedroom to fit everyone in.

trixymalixy · 11/03/2012 17:29

We have two thin mattresses on the Hemnes Maryz. I thInk it would be ideal for a 15 year old.

BIWI · 11/03/2012 17:29

I bought it with the two foam mattresses that they recommend - the £79 ones, I think. Although they are relatively thin - perhaps 4 inches deep? - the foam is very dense, and they are really comfy. And, when the bed is in single bed mode, the mattresses are stacked on top of each other.

I would definitely say it's not too late for your DD!
