SMEG fridge freezers

iloveberries · 15/02/2012 11:37

i'd like to buy a SMEG fridge freezer for my new kitchen but have a couple of questions:

  1. Where can you view them in a store? I am torn between cream or a colour but want to see the coloured ones in real life to check they're not too 'icky'.
  2. Where's the cheapest place to buy one?

Thanks for any replies in advance!!

I love these too,
Anyone own one and just love it?? Do tell us.

CaptainWentworth · 15/02/2012 20:13

Where are you based? They have I think three different colours on display in Fenwicks in Newcastle. Maybe a local large department store might do similar?

Whorulestheroost · 15/02/2012 20:15

Yes I have the cream one, it's the half fridge and half freezer one (if that makes sense!). I have had mine for about 8 years and have never had any problems with it. The good thing is that it's a timeless classic and looks good in most kitchens. Inside it's just a fridge and freezer, there's nothing special about it but it's the look I guess that makes them appealing! Not sure where you can view them as I had mine from mfi which closed years ago! I would go with cream it's classic. We have literally owned several houses and had kitchens from gloss white and now a f&b painted one and it looks just as good in both :)

I used to lust after one and still think they look fabulous, but changed my mind after I Googled reveiws...

I love the one in Wallace & Gromit - 'SMUG'

All the appliances in our kitchen are SMEG ones (left by previous owners) and I will never buy anything else made by SMEG. They all have their faults in one way or another and seem to be a really poor design.

pippibluestocking · 15/02/2012 23:05

our Smeg DW was crap, cost a fortune and broke down three times in 3 years before becoming irreparable. Mechanic told us that they are made by some other company and they're not any good any more

londonlottie · 16/02/2012 07:34

I'm not keen on the 50s styled ones, but have been lusting after the Piano one. It might be designed by an architect, but it's £2,300! Shock

RunsWithScissors · 16/02/2012 09:29

I've heard a lot of bad things about them. Style over substance... but if you just want to loOk at it and not use it, then no problem Grin

They are lOvely to look at though!

iloveberries · 16/02/2012 09:55

oh no!!!! I was hoping lots of people would say they were wonderful!

We are in the south east so Fenwicks in London would be possible for us. To be honest I hadn't looked at online reviews yet - just too absorbed with how pretty they are (I know i know, totally impractical!)

DH wants to get a giant american style one (any brand) so perhaps he'll get his wish on practicality grounds!

We haven't had any issues with ours and we have a smeg cooker, dishwasher and fridge freezer. The cooker is nearly 10 years old and still works soundly :)

lidldarling · 16/02/2012 15:46

I've got a beautiful cream coloured Gorenje, which is the same retro shape but much cheaper and has done nothing other than chill since I got it.

lidldarling · 16/02/2012 15:47

It's this one. Highly recommended.

iloveberries · 16/02/2012 16:05

looks nice lidl :)

I have a Smeg fridge freezer and bought it in an independent shop nr where we lived in Devon. It was 200 pounds off because it had a little scratch.
We bought it 5 and a half yrs ago, and has survived 2 moves.
It is light blue and it's bloody gorgeous.
I will get another smeg one when this dies, as it is beautiful.

Francagoestohollywood · 16/02/2012 16:16

I also have a smeg oven and it works as it should.

ArcticRoll · 18/02/2012 15:51

I've had a cream fifties Smeg fridge freezer for eight years. It really is style over substance as is poorly made but given the choice I would still buy it as I love it(I'm very shallow)!

PogueMahone · 18/02/2012 15:53

Can you keep other things in it too? (puerile emoticon)

Pagwaatch · 18/02/2012 15:57

I had a pale blue one. It was a beautiful thing but flimsey as shit and crap. It took me a couple of years to admit it as I had had to persuade dh that we should get one. Awful, just awful. I broke in the end and we replaced it. I now have a less pretty fridge but it works.

I also have a smeg range cooker. Also shit. I had to replace the obe that was in situ when we moved in with exactly the same style. The replacement was shit too.
Next year I am gutting my kitchen and I will cheerfully decline any smeg product suggestions.

Francagoestohollywood · 18/02/2012 16:04

Wow, mine works fine (but I don't demand much from a fridge other than keeping things cool) and has endured two moves with style.
And has looked gorgeous in 3 different kitchens.

Pagwaatch · 18/02/2012 16:11

It's odd isn't it?

Our just had to stand in plenty of room and look pretty. It was still shit and , like a beautiful pair of shoes just a tad too small, I so wanted it to be ok. I would have put up with a bit mediocre. But it stood there in all it's shiny gorgeousness being absoloutely crap.

Francagoestohollywood · 18/02/2012 16:36

What went wrong with yours, Pag?

Francagoestohollywood · 18/02/2012 16:40

Oooh Pag, if I had to get new appliances for the kitchen, I'd try to get my hands on the Alpes Inox cookers. They are stunning, imho (and good quality)

flagnogbagnog · 18/02/2012 16:51

We've got a retro style pink one. I love the way it looks and I'd wanted one for years but tbh I wouldn't recommend it. Our old bog standard fridge freezer was much better. I did get it with a few hundred pounds off in a sale, but still regret the money we spent. If you do get one, get one with the fridge at the top rather than the bottom like I've done. Also bear in mind the door is so thick it needs A LOT of space in order to be able to open it, so it won't 'butt' right up against a kitchen unit for example. We've had it for a couple of years now and it has never broken down or needed a repair so that's a plus.

belgo · 18/02/2012 16:54

I have a pink Smeg fridge with freezer compartment. Can no longer use the freezer section because theplastic door broke, and even though it's been replaced, it will break again if it's used too much.

Several other bits have broken, it's not good quality. Looks great though.
