SMEG fridge freezers

iloveberries · 15/02/2012 11:37

i'd like to buy a SMEG fridge freezer for my new kitchen but have a couple of questions:

  1. Where can you view them in a store? I am torn between cream or a colour but want to see the coloured ones in real life to check they're not too 'icky'.
  2. Where's the cheapest place to buy one?

Thanks for any replies in advance!!

Another bit broke the other day when I took out the shelves to wash them.

I also have the pastel pink FAB30, and it has indeed been fab. Gets admiring comments from visitors to the kitchen. Works great. But does take up a lot of space, and the bulk on the outside means it takes up more space than the volume of storage you actually get. But, for the style, the looks, the presence, I think it is an absolute winner.

Lots of things went wrong. The front plates snapped off the freezer drawers really early on. Then bits just kept breaking off and we found the bottoms shelves were wet quite often.
I blamed ds1 for ages until I took one of the door shelves out and the end snapped off. I was gutted when it turned out not to be his fault Grin I am not freakishly rough with appliances.

It is mighty pretty.

Perhaps I should get one just as a big wine unit and keep my proper fridge in the butchers pantry. Can I sell that idea to dh do you think?

Francagoestohollywood · 18/02/2012 17:19

Blimey, I guess we have been lucky then with ours!
We have the one with the freezer at the bottom. It is probably not very good if you need a big freezer, I suppose.

iloveberries · 18/02/2012 17:58

pagwaatch - love the idea of the big wine unit!

I am soooo torn now! massively divided opinions on the smeg! I'm not worried about the space as it's going in a big corner space with nothing else in it - hence wanting a fridge which looks pretty (massive girlie comment i know!)

I am also the one convincing DH so i sooo don't want to be wrong, i'll never hear the bloody end of it!

we used to have a cream fab30 f/f and I have to say I was a paid up member of the shit fridge freezer owners club. I'd coveted one for ages, but all the internal bits kept breaking and the worst thing was the seal on the door. Once that goes, you may as well bin it or buy another one and start again. Also the doors are so thick it impacts on the space inside. So you have a big fridge freezer with not so much internal shelf space. And the freezer is only big enough for fish fingers and a bag of peas, so you'll probably have to buy another freezer for the garage to use as your "real" freezer. Never again.

WhatGoodIsThis · 18/02/2012 21:26

I coveted one, saved up and got one.
It looked beautiful.
The shelves broke. The seal went.
truly horrible quality.

Francagoestohollywood · 18/02/2012 21:34

I must have bought the only one withut faults... Grin! I am now looking at it in suspicion, waiting for disaster...
Nah, I still love it!

TheCrackFox · 18/02/2012 21:43

This is why I love mumsnet. I have lusted after one for the past decade but just one thread on mumsnet has cured me.

PH1603 · 08/08/2014 11:11

Bit late too join this discussion (new to mumsnet) but DON'T buy a smeg!! They look fab but fall to bits and replacement for salad drawer is £75!!!! And the inner door shelves soon crumble so fixing a smeg is very expensive.

marcosharko · 11/08/2014 17:25

My advice is DONT buy anything smeg. I have had a two cookers now, and although they are very expensive, they were crap. when my repair man opened them up you could see the wiring was all burnt. considering the casing is all metal...and that there are 30amps going through this unit...its pretty bloody dangerous.

i was at a friends house recently and was admiring her 90cm smeg range cooker and she suddenly offered it to me, free of charge, gratis, for nothing.....because it had broken down, just outside the warranty. I declined.

ditto their dishwashers - the cycle takes AGES and uses plenty of power.

I have converted to Bosch for everything. not very expensive but they just work and work and work for ages.

Thefishewife · 11/08/2014 19:44

We have a cream Gorenje half fridge and half freezers it's really good looked at smeg and pretty much every review were awful

I think next also do a retro fridge

CalamitouslyWrong · 11/08/2014 21:54

Our smeg dishwasher is absolute crap. The repair guy basically had to replace everything in it (he decided that was the best way to ensure it might actually be fixed after 3 visits). The build quality is awful (the plastic casing round the on button cracked almost immediately), the design is atrocious (the cutlery baskets simply fall over all the time and all the cutlery falls out into the dishwasher) and it's just not all that effective at washing dishes.

We'd never buy anything with the word smeg on it again.

DavetheCat2001 · 21/07/2015 11:03

I'm sure no one is still reading this thread as it is ancient, but just in case..we have had a pink Smeg Fab32 fridge for about 8 years now and it has never given us any trouble. I'm almost scared to write that as I'll probably get home to a flood all over the kitchen floor this evening now!

The one I have is the one with the fridge bit at the bottom and the freezer at the top. I've read bad things about the small version with the ice box, mind you we have a union jack one here in my office kitchen and that seems to be ok despite being used en masse day in day out.

I do love my pink Smeg.

Lorveney · 22/08/2015 18:59

Hi, this is my first message, hope someone out there can help. I have MS and not much of a grip, I would love a Smeg fridge but worry they have a strong suction seal and are hard to open. Is this true?

alibubbles · 22/08/2015 20:43

DD bought a flat with an integrated Smeg fridge freezer, every surface was cracked, it was five years old and stank, even tough thoroughly cleaned. We binned it.

Regularhiding · 23/08/2015 00:12

Don't do it.
We had no end of problems from a few weeks in.
Customer service non existent
