If you were thinking of moving to Edinburgh...

But had no real idea of where to go, where would you advise? Confused DH has a job interview next week and might just get it. I really, really don't want to move again (have literally just moved, expecting DC2 in a couple of weeks, love it here) but I think if he gets it and really wants to, we have to do this. We currently live in a village near a small town and between two much larger towns/cities. We like it like that - close to amenities but quiet and set in beautiful countryside.

So Edinburgh centre wouldn't be ideal (or affordable, come to that!). I did a bit of searching on Rightmove, just to make me feel a bit better about the whole thing, and found that there are some really nice houses that we could possibly afford (have no idea about the 'guide price' and what that actually reflects). We just paid 370 for our current house and it does look like we could afford a 4 bed place rather than this 3 bed semi. But I have no idea where to look.

Ideally, a village or very small town within 10/15 miles of Edinburgh, nice countryside, and good commute into town (DH says there's no parking for this job so train would be good). Don't want to end up cut off or feeling isolated in a tiny place where nothing much happens - we may live in a village here but there are loads of toddler groups, social events, etc, locally. Any tips?

Spot the Fifer Blush

BelovedCunt · 10/12/2010 15:35

the commute from stirling would be a nightmare you nutters. i used to do it the other way. traffic is horrific and the train is expensive.

haddington is nice but not on the train and i think overpriced.

north berwick is v. expensive adn fairly pleased with itself.

i wouldn't go to fife as commuting again is horrific with weather affecting bridges.

linlithgow is ok but well ... everyone looks the same.

edinburgh burbs are your best bet for quality of life imo.

lovechoc · 10/12/2010 15:37

I'm with Beloved on this - travelling from Stirling would be a bad commute. Would take ages.

lovechoc · 10/12/2010 15:39

DH also says try Baberton and Juniper Green. Perhaps Stenhouse aswell?

BelovedCunt · 10/12/2010 15:40

juniper green etc are nice but weirdy as they are neither town proper or countryside. i would die if i lived there. isn't stenhouse a bit rough?

lovechoc · 10/12/2010 15:44

yeah but you'd get loads of house for your money!lol

My sil used to live in Morningside

Parts of Corstorphine are nice.

OP - \link{http://www.espc.com/\this website} is the best for looking at houses in Edinburgh/surrounds.

BelovedCunt · 10/12/2010 15:52

morningside and southside in general are lovely. Corstorphine is a bit blah but people who live there seem v. pleased with themselves [getting into my stride now!]

boogeek · 10/12/2010 15:57

I always fancied west linton - but I also would not rule out the city without going for a good look first.

BelovedCunt · 10/12/2010 16:04

i love east linton!

midnightexpress · 10/12/2010 16:10

BelovedCunt · 10/12/2010 16:11

but we have a good reason to be pleased with ourselves - we are not living in glasgow

TheCrackFox · 10/12/2010 16:16

Corstorphine is where dreams go to die.

midnightexpress · 10/12/2010 16:27

Xmas Grin at BC. Fair point, well made.

Ach corstorphine's not that bad.

5GoldenFimbos · 10/12/2010 16:30

Oooohhh one of the Edinburgh mn'rs who goes to the meet ups lives in Corstorphine. Not sure if she actually posts any more though.

BelovedCunt · 10/12/2010 17:00

BelovedCunt · 10/12/2010 17:01

5GoldenFimbos · 10/12/2010 17:06

BelovedCunt · 10/12/2010 17:09

oh sorry!

allnightlong · 10/12/2010 17:09

Your spoilt for choice regarding country/village locations close to Edinburgh.
My prefered areas would be Kirknewton, Mid Caulder, Ratho.
Balerno and Currie are nice places too a little more busy than the likes of Kirknewton that is a proper little village.

5GoldenFimbos · 10/12/2010 17:10

Don't worry Smile

iTigress · 10/12/2010 17:15

Look along the train line in Fife, lots of lovely wee placies. Dalgety Bay is an option but a pretty sterile one, although you can get some stunning views. It's the other side of the water from Ed, so full of commuters. More character the further into Fife you go - Cupar's only an hour on the train to Ed.

You don't choose to live in Leith, Leith chooses you. Wink

Sorry Beloved Cunt, didn't mean to steal your joke. I like your new name, has a certain ring about it.
