If you were thinking of moving to Edinburgh...

But had no real idea of where to go, where would you advise? Confused DH has a job interview next week and might just get it. I really, really don't want to move again (have literally just moved, expecting DC2 in a couple of weeks, love it here) but I think if he gets it and really wants to, we have to do this. We currently live in a village near a small town and between two much larger towns/cities. We like it like that - close to amenities but quiet and set in beautiful countryside.

So Edinburgh centre wouldn't be ideal (or affordable, come to that!). I did a bit of searching on Rightmove, just to make me feel a bit better about the whole thing, and found that there are some really nice houses that we could possibly afford (have no idea about the 'guide price' and what that actually reflects). We just paid 370 for our current house and it does look like we could afford a 4 bed place rather than this 3 bed semi. But I have no idea where to look.

Ideally, a village or very small town within 10/15 miles of Edinburgh, nice countryside, and good commute into town (DH says there's no parking for this job so train would be good). Don't want to end up cut off or feeling isolated in a tiny place where nothing much happens - we may live in a village here but there are loads of toddler groups, social events, etc, locally. Any tips?

Don't move to Dalgety Bay, it is a more sterile version of Milton Keynes.

midnightexpress · 10/12/2010 17:23

More sterile than MK . Is that possible?

TheCrackFox · 10/12/2010 17:32

Dalgetty Bay = Swindon Sur le Mer.

midnightexpress · 10/12/2010 17:36

I've always been intrigued by the name 'Skinflats' on the map. It sounds truly horrendous. Has anyone been?

TheCrackFox · 10/12/2010 17:39

No never been but if it is anywhere near Falkirk then it is best avoided.

Lol at Swindon sur le Mer! Avoid that, then. (we are not so far from the original Swindon, too.)

Stirling is a bit of a commute - have often fallen foul of late or cancelled trains into Eburgh from there. (DH's sister lives outside Stirling. Basically, if we got the post and moved up there, my PIL would rub their hands, sell up and move to be close to both grandchildren! My own parents would be devastated, though. Sad) Wonderful views and countryside there, though.

I like the look of some of the small places on the south bank of the Forth, east and west of the city, but suspect some of them are just too quiet for much going on.

The 'offers over' system does my head in. Clearly I need to do more research to see just how much over the guide price houses go for. I got all excited on Rightmove the other evening, looking at houses priced at around 370 (finding places just over the Forth that had 5 or even 6 bedrooms, old stone houses, gorgeous. But of course, the guide price means it'll be a lot more. SadConfused).

the offers over system is dying. just ask the vendor what they want. [channels phil]

TheCrackFox · 10/12/2010 18:07

Don't worry about Offers Over - unless there are lots of "notes of interests". A lot of houses are now going straight onto the market as "Fixed Price".

lovechoc · 10/12/2010 19:08

yep, most are fixed price at the moment. I'd say go in under the fixed price or just under the asking price. they are bound to be accepted because the market is so stagnant just now. people just want shot of their property in a lot of cases...

You know what they say about people from Morningside - all furcoat and no knickers!!! lol

Morningside v snobby part of Edinburgh (used to work there). There's also Bruntsfield if you fancy living close to the city centre?

Dalgety Bay in Fife is not a great choice IMO, because it has absolutely no character at all. There's no sense of community, it is just full of housing schemes/developments. I think half of the Edinburgh population now living in Dalgety Bay, that's why all the house prices in Fife have now shot up :(

lovechoc · 10/12/2010 19:09

Am pretty sure Skinflats is near Stirling, correct me if I'm wrong.

lovechoc · 10/12/2010 19:12

Have friends in Kirknewton - fab place to bring up children and it has a wonderful wee primary school too. Wonderful village, plenty community spirit going on there. I think it's within the Balerno High catchment area! Bonus :)

allnightlong · 10/12/2010 23:01

Thats right it's in the Balerno catchment area. Plus regular trains to Edinburgh and Glasgow. Currently the playground is meant to be getting updated too.
