Twin basins, naff or useful?

We're still planning our art deco shower room (and probably will be for some time!) and am wondering if we should put in twin basins.

We're not having a bath so there'll just be a loo, basin (or two) plus a large shower cubicle. The room is 3m long x 2m wide.

DH shaves every morning and leaves a little trail of hairs after him, I'm thinking it might be nice to have my own, CLEAN basin.

But are twin basins naff/best left to hotels only?

They look very nice but to be honest we don't share the bathroom in our house...tend to use separate bathrooms.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 15/10/2010 21:54

Tell DH how much it costs for two basins.

Then see if he wants to start clearing up after himself.

orienteerer · 15/10/2010 21:56

We rented a house that had twin basins in the guest/family shower room. We never used it as a couple (as used our en-suite bathroom with one basin) but think it's probably fine if you have the space.

.......Please tell be you will still have a bath in the house....?

orienteerer · 15/10/2010 21:57

......tell me - (not be)...............

wasabipeanut · 15/10/2010 21:57

Depends on the bathroom. If it's an ensuite for you and DH and you've gone for the boutique hotel look maybe.

If its a family bathroom for you and the kids I'd be thinking one oversized basin so they could both still do their teeth at the same time for example.

Funnys5FootUnderThePatioGarden · 15/10/2010 21:57

naff but at the same time useful Grin Do it. I wish we had 2 basins

Pannacotta · 15/10/2010 22:00

DH is almost blind minus his glasses so claims he does rinse out the sink after a shave, sadly for me he cannot see the gubbins le leaves behind.

Yes we will have a bath, the shower room is a spare room at the mo and there's a family bathroom as well, which we need to renovate in time, probably once the avocado suite finally gives up the ghost.

Naff and really quite pointless.

Pannacotta · 15/10/2010 22:02

my last post not v clear, yes it'll be a posh shower room just for me and DH, I hope,(not ensuite though), and family bathroom will have a big sink once we renovate it.

OP posts:
Pannacotta · 15/10/2010 22:04

lala I used to think they were pointless until I got really fed up with having to clean the sink every morning after DH before I could brush my teeth.

Not sure our budget can quite stand up to it though...

As you have the space I'd go for it.

wasabipeanut · 15/10/2010 22:05

Ah I failed to read your first post properly. tbh I'm not a huge fan of twin basins but if it is a major cause of marital disharmoney then go for it!

lalalonglegs · 15/10/2010 22:18

Can't you just make him wear his glasses and/or learn to use a j-cloth? If you don't, you'll still end up cleaning "his" sink even if you do get two - he just doesn't seem that keen to do it himself.

Honestly, I do think twin basins are prissy and daft. They're meant to convey a certain level of luxury but they don't any more than curly brass door handles or faux-leather sofas.

Pannacotta · 15/10/2010 22:23

Yes I could try harder to get him to be more careful.

He is quite slovenly but I suppose if I remind him of the price difference between one and two basins that might work!

OP posts:
MaryMotherOfCheeses · 15/10/2010 22:48

So if you've got two sinks, and one is always mucky, and getting muckier cos you're not cleaning it before you use it... Would it bother you?

stillbobbysgirl · 15/10/2010 22:54

In 12 years, I have never felt the need to use the bathroom sink at the same time as DH. That would be yuk.

Pannacotta · 16/10/2010 08:53

The purpose of having twin sinks wouldnt be to use the bathroom at the same time as DH, rather that we would have a sink each and I wouldnt have to clean the sink every morning before I brush my teeth, but I realise its a bit of a luxury which we can't really afford!

GrendelsMum · 16/10/2010 21:17

Tell him to put his glasses on in the morning and then wipe it over.

Hey presto, £200 saved! (which can now be spent on super expensive Italian pots for your garden)

daddadoesnadda · 17/10/2010 10:38

not naff at all.

and so useful, dh and i always go to bed at the same time so we can brush teeth/wash our faces at the same time.

I think they will be useful when the dcs are old enough to use the sinks too.

MumtoF · 30/10/2010 14:54

Also means you can have your own undersink cabinet which is great.

LillianGish · 30/10/2010 14:58

If you've got room I'd say it's useful - don't really understand why it would be naff. We used to live in a house with twin basins and while we didn't routinely use them at the same time it was useful at times.

No, not naff; we would love to have twin basins as we often use the bathroom simultaneously at bedtime. I mentioned this to my mother and she went Shock so obviously not everyone does this!

We are just renovating said bathroom, but due to a headroom issue (loft conversion) we will unfortunately have to stick with a single basin (and take it in turns to spit the toothpaste!!).

quizling · 31/10/2010 00:58

naff and pointless

mumonthenet · 31/10/2010 14:00

not naff and not pointless.

We have twin basins in the ensuite.

We are not always in the bathroom together but when dh is shaving or whatever, I sometimes run in there, clean teeth, or rinse make-up off hands, or brush hair (in mirror above my side iyswim). Could survive with out the extra but I think it's a tiny luxury...especially if you have room.

I would rather have two small basins - and a worktop - than one large one.

I also think it adds value to the master suite...if ever you come to sell the house.

I wish I'd put twin basins in the kids' bathroom too!
