Ok, now I am know this thread wont make me the most popular person, but I need some advice/reassurance (or a kick up the back side ;-) .

My 5 yr started a new local school in a new area (where we have moved to)and has already started picking up the accent, which to put it mildly I do not like!

Hmmm - do I accept this? Will she grow out of it? Any words of wisdom?

Oh blah blah blah blah BLAH, Magal.

That makes us just as bad as each other and yes, there are plenty of people who can hear through others' silly attempts to neutralise no matter what. There will always be such folk.

So neutralise away, have fun, what have you.

Mexico was robbed and now they are losing. It sucks. A victory would have meant so much to the nation. Argentina are probably going to go all the way, so at least they scored against what are probably the world champions.

Come to think of it, I've never met anyone in Latin America attempt to neutralise their accent. That would be a great shame.

Argentinian Spanish is very beautiful. But boy! don't they know it!

Gutted. Just gutted for Mexico right now. Only 7 minutes left and no extra time.

expat and magal - get a room! lol

expatinscotland · 27/06/2010 21:16

Fuck. Less than five minutes.

Someone had to lose, and it was always going to be Mexico. Was just hoping for a miracle.

That quarterfinal between Argentina and Germany is going to be unbelievable.

i love accents, too, Pot.

i apparently have an American one in French but i can't hear it.

strangely, though, i can hear it in other people!

and i can hear my accent in spanish, too, as well as those of other spanish speakers.

it's beneficial, too, because of regional differences in the language. makes it easier to communicate, IMO.

damn, it's over.

mexico has lost.

i'm actually crying.

I adore reginal accents - it's a crying shame that people choose to neutralise them. How dull! My accent is a hybrid of all the countries I've lived in, I'm such a slut for accents, it's hard for anyone to place me.
Dh, speaks with a very neutral Southern English accent which only reflects his time spent in Oxford...still I love the bugger though and his semi-posh accent!

My kids speak with a completely different accent to me but I only ever notice it when I speak to them on the phone - it's cute.

Words for the OP - get something real to worry about, or expand your mind/social circle in some way, go on surprise yourself, there's a whole world out there to explore!

Doh - meant "regional" accents...
