As the title asks:

How much is your school blazer (mins is £35)
Material - polyester, (yuck) but machine washable
Embroidered logo - yes stitched onto pocket.
Supplier - one local childrenswear shop so no competition, therefore he can charge what he likes hmmmm not happy about that.

I'm about to buy a new blazer and was surprised at all of the above.......man-made fabric, fairly expensive for what you get and only fro one local shop.

Opinions please before I think about raing off to the Head.

Finally, do any of your schools have uniform 2nd hand sales or are able to buy unifor direct from the school?
Thanks everyone!

We get the badge suopplied by DS1's school then sew it onto any black blazer. Cant remember what I paid. tad under £20 I think, machine washable but gone lovely and shiny now and a bit saggy!!. Looks great with school diner on it.!!. DS2 primary has second hand uniform sales. DS1 secondary doesnt. . Sister's kids at private so very expensive blazers definatly has second hand sales. Her kids blazers always come from there. Both DC's schools have a uniform shop for the logoed items

DD's school blazer (summer uniform, worn outside only, such as on way to school) is bought from John Lewis - only place we can get it from, bar the school's second hand shop.

It comes with the school badge already on it, on the pocket.

It is pure wool, with a polyester lining. Not washable.

Costs about £70 IIRR

Hulababy · 05/02/2010 09:38

Think second hand blazers are about £30 IIRR

DD's was £70. It was a polyester nasty as well - only available in one shop (an old fashioned gentlemen's outfitters in Cheltenham). It is a complete swizz - a state school uniform should NOT cost this much I feel.

MissAnneElk · 05/02/2010 12:04

DD1s washable polyester blazer cost £35 direct from the school. She has to wear it in the summer and winter but it is only compulsory for 3 years. I had intended to replace it each year, but she just shrugged and said it's OK and it still fits, so it's limping towards the end of it's life this summer

On a per wear basis I think it's been outstanding value, even at £70 it would be great value. I have heard many parents moaning about the cost. TBH when she moves to 6th form, then I expect to have to pay a lot more overall in clothes for school.

DS's blazer was about £80 and made of 100% wool (exterior, lined with poly I believe). Very good quality (tough, and survived daily use for 2 years). I think it is very expensive for a child's uniform.

SofaQueen · 05/02/2010 14:51

We do have a second hand sale, but the blazers go quickly (way before I get my act together to get there!).

Carrotfly · 05/02/2010 14:52

Dont talk to me about this.

DS has currently lost his new one. Was only bought in September.

It was £75.

thedollyridesout · 05/02/2010 14:54

I paid £100 for the last blazer I bought for DD and it wasn't even unisex so I wouldn't have been able to pass it down to DS1. It is in a terrible state after 1 year - both cuffs are frayed.

southeastastra · 05/02/2010 14:54

£45, i saw one wool one in the same shop that would have fitted sooty and it was £75

LetsEscape · 05/02/2010 16:51

£90, but no one buys them new. Second hand blazers go for £20.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 05/02/2010 16:52

Last one was £68, wool with a crap lining.

primarymum · 05/02/2010 17:29

We don't have blazers, we have a fleece, maximum cost £13 ( to fit yr 6's,) they start at £8 for little ones, and they last AGES, there are some children we have wearing ones that must be AT LEAST 5 years old as we have changed the school name since then and they are still wearing ones with the old name on!

Smithagain · 05/02/2010 17:33

at some of these prices. I don't even spend that much on a jacket for me!

Batteryhuman · 05/02/2010 17:35

Ridiculous garments for primary school kids.

EccentricaGallumbits · 05/02/2010 17:36

£28. only available through school. Made from recycled plastic bottles

jellybeans · 05/02/2010 17:38

£35

pugsandseals · 05/02/2010 17:44

£70 through school. Quality not too bad but everyone moans about the senior school ones at the same price which look really scruffy after a couple of washes!

chocices · 05/02/2010 19:10

£55 for dd's. Secondary state school can only be bought from school outfitters shop. No badge. No 2nd hand market, appears that parents get the children to wear them into the ground. Would expect to buy 2/3 years wear from them, therefore worn all day every day, worth the money.

£90 for ds's. Independent prep school wool blazer from same shop incidently as DDs. Can buy 2nd hand from school for £45. Worn to and from school, would expect to get 2 years out of it, just due to growing, and then sell it 2nd hand.

webchick · 05/02/2010 22:09

Thanks everyone, seems that I'm being charged Market rate for a polyester one. I see them on Woolies website for £14.99 but no badge obviously. Hmm

They are £28(ish) or something like this in John Lewis, £5 to put a badge on it unless you can do it yourself.

£70ish Wool Tweed. Secondhand £10. Had to buy my DD a brand new one - s none in the S/H shop for 2 terms- the sleeves on her old one were getting ridiculously short!

But the school were fab - fitted her with one with lots of room. Had to tack up the sleeves but am hoping it will see her through now until she leaves in July 2012.
