As the title asks:

How much is your school blazer (mins is £35)
Material - polyester, (yuck) but machine washable
Embroidered logo - yes stitched onto pocket.
Supplier - one local childrenswear shop so no competition, therefore he can charge what he likes hmmmm not happy about that.

I'm about to buy a new blazer and was surprised at all of the above.......man-made fabric, fairly expensive for what you get and only fro one local shop.

Opinions please before I think about raing off to the Head.

Finally, do any of your schools have uniform 2nd hand sales or are able to buy unifor direct from the school?
Thanks everyone!

How much is your school blazer: £120

Material - wool with polyester lining. Allegedly dry clean only, but I put it in the machine on a delicates cycle.

Embroidered logo - yes embroidered onto pocket.

Supplier - school shop only. Second hand ones (also from school shop) are much cheaper, but they're rotten quality so a false economy. Though given the rotten quality, £100+ is a complete rip-off.

I think about £40 for nasty polyester blazer with embroidered pocket. But then you have to buy 'school buttons' which are embossed with the scholl coat of arms and sew tham on.They are £10 for 2.the blazers look tatty within a few months and no possibiility of passing them on.the school doesn't have a second hand shop.Compulsort right through the school

£20 for blazer for DD from M&S. Polyester. Plus another £5 for the badge from school that was a bastard difficult to sew on (we're not allowed to iron them on in case they get pulled off). No second hand shop at the school. Blazer to be worn at all times. Except that from this year, the school have decided to bring in a summer uniform as well...that will be compulsory...of a black (?!-in summer?!) polo shirt with embroidered school logo without the blazer. Which will mean two uniforms per year. They change the colour band on the 'V' of the jumper after Y7 as well. Who knew that secondary uniform would be this expesive, OR changed this often???? No-one blimmin warned me! DD had a full set for September that she (more than) grew out of (she shot up nearly 3 inches between Sep and Christmas), A full new set in January, and I'm now going to have to buy the polo shirts at £14 a time for Easter. 3 Sets in Y7!! . I keep getting asked if it's a private school. It's not.

ds in secondary, is 45. but since he wears it for 12 hours a day, every day, and we only need to buy him a new one when he grows out of the old one, currently on his third, now in year 8, i think it is money well spent. most definitly cheaper than buying four jumpers a term from high street and still having him look tatty.

£54 from the school shop - also polyester but at least you can bung them in the machine - its worn well and am going to pass it down to a friends ds who is starting in september...

nickschick · 07/02/2010 13:14

DS1s forst blazer in 2005 was £55 it was from the reccomended school shop was washable and had embrooidered logo on (motto spelt wrong tho!!).

I then found a smaller shop/market stall doing similar thing although clearly less quality for £25 with motto spelt correctly.

DS1 has 2 blazers in 3 years

DS2 had 4 blazers in 2 years ....thankfully neither need them now.

School uniforms are a rip off.

If its a state school the uniform has to be reasonably priced, and seemed ridicolous to need to spend this much on uniform..

kitkatsforbreakfast · 07/02/2010 21:12

Our blazer I think was £35.
It's made of polyester which made me shudder.
But, it's machine washable and seems to be wearing well - looks like new after 6 months wear. Also unisex so should do both ds2 and dd in due course.
As he wears it every day I don't think it's too bad value at pounds per wear, although I do think a 7 year old boy looks rather daft in a blazer at any time.

MarionCole · 07/02/2010 21:17

£35, machine washable polyester with badge stitched onto pocket. One local supplier.

Next question - how long should such a blazer last?

DSD has been wearing hers now for 2.5 years and it's looking decidedly dog eared. Wondering whether to buy her a new one (it still fits, so no need to, just looks scruffy)

orienteerer · 07/02/2010 21:17

No blazer, only a navy blue barbour style coat.

sunnydelight · 07/02/2010 23:07

$170 Australian (about 90 pounds) from uniform shop only with logo on pocket. It's very good quality, like a good suit jacket really. An expensive item though, especially as "optional senior uniform" is casual so they don't have to wear the blazer, but must have it for official events. I'm hoping to pass it on to DS2 in a couple of years.

islandofsodor · 07/02/2010 23:11

Dd and ds's are pure wool, with the school badge already sewn in. £75 from the school uniform shop £35 from the swop shop.

Both dd and ds had 2nd hand ones Dd has had hers for 3 years don't know how long the previous child had it.

Ds has had his for 2 years, previuous child had it for 1 year.

MollieO · 08/02/2010 00:01

We are supposed to spend £90 to get one from the school's official supplier - Harrods . Everyone I know buys them either at the secondhand uniform sale or from a local unofficial supplier for £72.

MollieO · 08/02/2010 00:02

Wool with polyester lining. I wash it in the machine and take it to the dry cleaners to be pressed. No logo (but lots of stripes!).
