Quickie - what are your yr2's spellings this week please?

Because we have an anomalous selection of HF words he has been able to read, spell and write for months.

I am baffled at the list:

mum
my
dog
day
the
no

Is this usual or is he being given the really easy stuff? He's only just started bringing home spellings last week and they were similarly nonsensical then.

Thanks.

They are the National Literacy Strategy High Frequency Words

Flightattendant · 19/01/2010 19:32

Thanks Mrz but surely giving them to a child who knows them very well is a bit, well, pointless? Or do they just test everyone on these as a rite of passage?

Ds is yr 1 and his spellings this week were:

Summer
Dinner
Fight
Light
Lunchbox
They

mrz · 19/01/2010 19:35

Spelling tests are pretty pointless anyway

Lucycat · 19/01/2010 19:35

none! the snow seems to have affected hw. But they do seem easy for Yr2 - more reception imo

Flightattendant · 19/01/2010 19:37

Thanks thedollshouse,
that puts it into context doesn't it! Why is ds getting such easy words?

SleepingLion · 19/01/2010 19:41

DS is in YR 2 and his spellings this week are:
show, know, throw, arrow, yellow, shadow, below, narrow, swallow, scarecrow, following, wheelbarrow.

Last week his words included coastline, roadside, cloakroom and lifeboat.

HTH - I would be frankly amazed if he came home with the list you have mentioned.

pointysaysrelax · 19/01/2010 19:46

Is it a revision week? I'd ask.

mrz · 19/01/2010 19:48

the words thedollshouse's son has for spellings seem totally random at least sleepinglion's list has some point.

zanz1bar · 19/01/2010 19:48

Glad to see this thread as I do not understand why DD has these words,
What
But
Has
Last

Thats it, nothing else.
She is also in year two. Seems to me to be taking a backward step.

Flightattendant · 19/01/2010 19:49

Thanks

Have just asked ds did everyone get the same list.
'all of us in purple group'

'what's purple group? Is it the cleverest group?' (intractably positive!)

'No it's the group that does very easy stuff, that's why Mrs thing chose it, because we're not very good at stuff'

Oh my good lord.

DD is in the top group for spellings and told me the other day she plans to start getting them wrong so she gets less and easier spellings !!!!!

Stinkyfeet · 19/01/2010 20:14

I know the list includes: tree, three, their, time, these and some others I can't remember. There are several different lists, at various levels, being worked on by different children in the class, depending on their ability. HTH.

Flightattendant · 19/01/2010 20:23

Thankyou for the lists - I know it has to be appropriate for ability but he has zero problem with these words, seriously.

It's the fact they don't know this and assume he can't do anything further on that is worrying me.

I'm going to go and talk to her tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Perhaps they are trying to built confidence DD had a few weeks of easy spellings the they have got a lot harder !!!

saintpeta · 19/01/2010 20:44

rescue
argue
issue
flue
annoyed
thirteen
thirsty

can't remember the other three but the words they get for homework are to do with their level of ability (that's what's supposed to happen). He then has to put them into a sentence. If you find they are too easy just ask them to change them to more challenging ones.

boakleesk · 19/01/2010 22:00
