Because we have an anomalous selection of HF words he has been able to read, spell and write for months.

I am baffled at the list:

mum
my
dog
day
the
no

Is this usual or is he being given the really easy stuff? He's only just started bringing home spellings last week and they were similarly nonsensical then.

Thanks.

true spelling isn't my strong point

Actually, I'm being facetious and mendacious.

I was looking in Dd's book earlier wavering on that she hasn;t haD spellings since October (y1). Are her school a bit soft on her?

yes but I personally think spelling tests are a waste of time DD and DS learn the words but can't remember them 2 weeks later
