When do your children do their homework ?

usually in the morning before they are due to be handed in. and mostly with me dictating the answer .

I have also been known to write the answers myself with my left hand in order to make it look more authentic.

I have also been know to get the answers at primary level wrong

Well, the reception child presumably won't have homework, so I would give them a snack as soon as they get home, then let the little one have 20 minutes television while you read with the bigger one. Then it's out of the way before tea, and the older one can have some time on his own with you playing a game or something, once the little one's in bed.

That's how I did it anyway.

Mine do theirs when we get in from school, after a quick snack, before they get changed out of their uniform so they are still in "school" mode.

It works for us as they know after they have done it their time is their own till tea time.

I hear dd read her short ORT books first, and do her words, whilst my older ds reads through his longer book himself. Then I send dd off to get changed and hear him read. We do his spellings then too. He only gets one sheet of maths a week at the moment, although that will change in September, and DH usually does that with him at the weekend.

I would refuse to do any homework apart from reading in Reception..........but that's me.

Seeker, DD was in reception this year, she got 4 sight words to learn and 2 reading books 3 times a week! at least there was no maths homework for her, and what she did get only took about 15 minutes, including the reading.

I'd do the reading but nothing else.

Homework at this age serves no purpose at all - it's just that [some] parents like it.

And spelling tests do nothing but teach children how to do spelling tests. A lot of schools have abandoned spelling tests altogether.

Exactly what i feel seeker. I have always read with my dc but as for all the other rubbish they are given at such a young age, i do not worry about at all.

They are exhausted from being at school for 6 hours let alone having 'paperwork' in the evenings.

DS1 had homework everyday for reception. We do what we feel like doing, eg write and draw about what you did over weekend - DS1 loves drawing and I usually have to stop him and tell him to go and play. We ignore what we don't like. We do them usually after school. Only just before term ended we started doing the words after DS2 has gone to bed. It's all nonsense anyway. Do what you like and ignore what you don't like, that's my policy. Makes for a happier family. Down with tyranny of school.

every day, usually after tea, or when they are tucked up in bed. Just a few mins a day and it will click.

Mine are older now, so this is going back a bit. But still reading with the 9 year old.

Dd did her homework last year in the waiting room of the ballet school as homework night co-incided with ballet night and we had a bit of a wait around.

I'm a bit anti homwork at primary level so I don't fuss too much over it and send the odd snotty note in if anyone says anything.

I'm anti-homework for primary school aged children. Except for reading when children aren't yet ready to read to themselves.
I found it best hearing them in the morning when they were fresh.

Reading - every night in bed before DS goes to sleep, I read a page, he reads a page etc - sometimes school books, sometimes library books.

Maths homework - Saturday or Sunday

Spellings - when we remember!

As soon as they get home from school- even before they change into play clothes. That way they're still in a school frame of mind and will sit and do it all no bother.

dd1 is 9
she has always just done her homework immeadiately when she walks in
but she loves school, wants more homework, is very bright
it just gets it out of the way and then they switch off from school till the next day

We do homework and reading at breakfast time. I work FT and this is the time that works best for us.

It just doesn't work for us unless it's done pretty much as soon as we get in. Mine get the bus home so it's 4pm by the time they are in so quick snack and straight to it. DD is in kindy (reception) and has 1/2 reading books which we're expected to read every night Mon-Thur, she gets 6 sight words to learn and a memory verse to remember. Occasionally there's an optional task (eg. find as many sh words as you can in your books) which we rarely do.

DS2 is Y4 and is expected to complete his 4/5 tasks in 40 minutes (spellings, times tables, mathletics, reading etc.) He often asks for a rest before starting but I find if I give him longer than 20 minutes or so he moans about doing the work so it's kinder in the long run to make him get it out of the way asap. DS1 is old enough to manage himself.

I'm in awe of those who manage anything before school - mine leave the house at 7.50am though, I'm guessing you're later?
