When is your school "day"?

DS's (infants) school starts at 9am and ends at 3pm.

A friend's DD's infants school runs from 8.45am - 3.30pm.

I'm surprised that friend's school day is so long, but she is equally surprised that mine is so short.

THB I think that 9-3 is quite enough for infants, but interested to hear what is the "norm" in primary schools (I think the junior school here - separate school - does run for slightly longer).

DD's school has the fllowing hours:

Reception: 8:25am-3:25pm
Y1-2: 8:25am-3:30pm
Y3-6: 8:25am-3:45pm

They may well have a similar amount of time in class, but may have longer break times and lunch times. DD's school has nearly 1,.5 hours at lunch time and has a good lengthy break both int he morning and afternoon.

They stagger the finish times to help with traffic round the school.

DD manages fine with this length of school day, so we are happy with it.

DD (just 4) starts at 9 am and ends at 4.15 pm.

She can be dropped off at any time between 8.30 am and 9 am.

If I wanted I could take her home for lunchbreak (12.00 to 1.30 pm).

8.35am - 3.20pm YR -Y5

RustyBear · 26/11/2008 13:27

At the Junior school I work at, the times are:
8.40 a.m. Doors open
8.45 a.m. School bell
10.30 a.m.-10.45 a.m. Break
12.10 p.m. -1.10 p.m. Lunch
3.15 p.m. End of school

The infant school we're linked to, which is about 100 yards round the corner, starts ten minutes later & finishes ten minutes earlier, to give parents time to drop off & collect at both schools.

Elibean · 26/11/2008 14:34

9am to 3.15

littlerach · 26/11/2008 14:59

8.55am til 3.10pm.
Hour and 5 mins for lunch and a break am and pm.

bozza · 26/11/2008 15:06

8.50 - 3.30 for all years from reception to 5.

Staggered finish times like hula's would annoy me because from January DD will be in YR and DS in Y3.

bythepowerofgreyskull · 26/11/2008 15:08

8.50 - 3.30 here right through the primary school

hippipotami · 26/11/2008 15:08

Dd's school (YR - Y2) is 8.45 - 3.00. 30 minute morning break and a 1.5hrs lunch break.

Ds's school (Y3 - Y6) is 8.40 - 3.00. 30 minute morning break and a 1.5hrs lunch break.

Takver · 26/11/2008 17:21

DDs school:
R - Yr 6: 9.00 - 3.30
Nursery children 1.30 - 3.30
But 9 days out of 10 they aren't actually out the door til 3.40 or later. Which would seem less unreasonable if they weren't so snotty about people turning up 30 seconds late in the morning.

Hulababy · 26/11/2008 20:54

Yes, staggered ends can be a bit for those with children in different years, although I do know a number of schools with such set ups.

Also after school care is free until 4pm - so people with children in the junior part of school could have younger children go to after school care for 10 minutes or so to avoid the lengthy wait.

Our school also works wth the boy's school locally too to ensure parents have time to get between schools for drop off/collection.

MollieO · 26/11/2008 22:35

R 8.50 - 3.20
20 mins morning break
30 mins lunch
15 mins afternoon break

Yr 1 - 6 8.50 - 3.50
No idea about breaks/lunch

FairLadyRantALot · 26/11/2008 22:38

our Primary school staggers the start/finish depending on age, with infants having the shortest day and than the rest of infantschool age is longer by 15 minutes and junior school age adds another 15 oor 30 minutes,,,,
