What do they actually DO in Reception?

You know, the text book responses

But would genuinely like to have some idea about how she's spending her days!

my dd says that they wriggle on the floor like snakes and make bird food.

Me: Did you do PE today?

DD: Can't remember

ME: Well, did you have to get your PE kit on?

DD: We curled up in a ball

ME: Was that all?

DD: Yes

And that's good going atm

And what do they eat at school dinners? Beans every day according to my lad...

It's tres frustrating!

Reading stories from big books together

Counting things

Looking at shapes

Playing with lego/playdough/construction/jigsaws etc

Singing songs

Playing musical instruments noisily

Having a go on the computer

Playing games with each other

Going outside to play

Loads of other stuff I can't think of at the moment!

curry according to my non curry eating dd. with rice and veg, that or egg sarnies with mas and gravy

we get a menu sent to us by the local council. so i do think she actually does eat curry or egg sarnies.

her home work books says that they are doing 3d shapes in numeracy, pe is twice a week and she does phonics and has tricky words that she has to learn to read. her tricky words this term are the, into, I, for and another one. she has eaten them though so we need a new tricky word sheet. they also learn to recgonise and recite the alaphabet and how to count to 100.

That's the sort of stuff I was after

I can see what she does by what's on display etc (games, lego, computer etc)

Am just nosy re the interactive stuff - what they do during playtime, when they're sitting on the mat etc

they have flapjack every day and that pudding thats like porridge but isn't porridge!

lunches figure a lot in my DS's account of his days.

from his timetable i know he's doing PE, french, ICT, sums, phonics and lots of play.

Lots of play, dressing up, role play, playing in the sand pit, social interaction. Listening to stories or sharing news on the carpet, singing songs, playing with instruments, dancing, listening to music. PE - what we used to call Music and Movement. Learning what the expected behaviour is in various different settings - in the classroom, library, playground, dining hall. Playing outside at least three times a day, sometimes with toys and equipment, sometimes just running around getting rid of some excess energy. Some numeracy and some literacy every day.

And no, they won't only be having beans for dinner ...! You can probably ask in the office for a set of weekly menus if you really want to know what they're eating.

Homework?!

None of that so far, I am very pleased to say. A storybook to read each day is all so far

yes he gets homework. she gets a new spelling to learn each week and a list of tricky owrds each half term. her spelling this week is 'gock'. as well as a book read each night.

My DH is a Reception teacher. He said they are mainly learning new sounds and counting numbers at the moment. The rest of the day is play based - they like the sand, water etc.

My DD plays all day every day (so she says) (which is fine by me, in fact I hope she does, she's only 4). She has chicken pie then yogurt for her dinner every day (even though that is not on the menu) apart from once, when she had pizza with a ham sandwich for pudding. When they have PE they climb and put beanbags in a box (and nobody notices if she spends the entire day with her shoes on back to front). She says it is fine to take Barbie to school (and I am very mean not to let her).
The only schooly thing I have got out of her is great excitement at being given a book to write in! What did they write? ssss.

ds says everyone else had shepherds pie but he chose the green option for pasta (am guessing green means veg).
He named two boys who were being naughty and made the teacher cross (of course he was not one of them )
He sang some songs.
He played football and his team were the winners.
He got a sticker for helping to tidy up.
All the children took it in turns to use the computer.

That's all I've had in 2 weeks and it's been quite a job getting that info!

DD was a bean in PE.

Apparently.

They play, according to DS2. And they don't learn ANYTHING.

DS did nothing at school today.

But came home with orange paint all over his trousers.

Whatever it was he didn't do, it was messy.

Oh yeah I got the not learning ANYTHING too. Plus all of a sudden he is very competetive and cocky. Not liking that so much. 21 boys in his class. Poor teacher.

DS1 seems to keep schtum until it is time to go to sleep - if I lie on the bed with him and ask what his favorite thing has been today - all of a sudden we get an outpouring of detail - who said what - who was on the rainbow/black cloud/sunshine and why I LOVE IT he is such a gossip

she eats 'dinner' with a very accurate description of pudding
Also always comes home with shoes on wrong feet.
She tells me they play whats the time my wolf (still!) and in pe they do dragon steps and fairy steps.
If you walk into her school during the day their is always children marching round in a band,buzz lightyear exists, and their is sand and water everywhere.
oh and they appear to make endless trips to the loo!

Me: What do you do at school

DS: Nothing
ME: Do you have any lessons?
DS No.
Me: Do you do any counting or sums or anything?
DS: We did some counting the other day.

Now I'm sure he is doing all the things mentioned before and he certainly doesn't mind going but you would think he could come up with a few things, just to keep me happy

Its only now my eldest is in Y1 that I actually get told some of what he does.

I get the same - 'nothing', 'can't remember', 'don't know'. Occasionally for emphasis I get a very stern 'NO'.

Yesterday they had sports. He came home without some of his PE kit, wearing someone else's sock and a note from his teacher to explain the cut and bruise on his face. I asked him if he enjoyed sports and he said (in as stern a voice as a 4 yr old can manage) "Mummy I did NOT have sports today".

He was singing 'Frere Jacques' this morning so I guess he is doing something!

Well, as of today dd decided to tell me all about school

Namely, how she enjoys being kissed by all the boys

That she has a favourite boy, but doesn't really mind who kisses her because she is "ALL of their favourites, Mummy"

Pleas tell me this is normal Reception behaviour...

Jolly Phonics
Playing traffic lights in PE
Learning to hold a pencil
Assembly (bizarely this is his favourite part of school)

Its taken careful questionning to get this information out of him
