SPJS and WUS 8+ Preparation Advice!

Hello all,

My DS will be sitting the 8+ exam for SPJS and WUS this January 2025. I have read different things here so could anyone clarify whether the exams are online on a computer, or whether they have physical written papers? Both schools websites are quite vague and mysterious about this! DS is very academic and flying through school so we haven't been tutoring him, I was thinking we should do a little bit of ATOM, CGP and Exam Papers Plus; would this be a good plan? Have I missed anything that might help him?

Thanks in advance, quite nervous that we haven't been doing much already!

Hard to tell. Mine is top of the whole year at his Prep school so I thought I'd just prepare him myself. Did the CGP's, EPPs but he didn't get in any of the schools we applied to. So who knows what the competition is capable of!

Also this was a whole year of prepping! But your child may be cleverer than mine, so you might be ok

Did yours get through to 2nd stage?

Wasitalwaysgoingtobelikethis · 07/11/2024 20:22

Nope! I still think he is a very clever boy, and still top of his year as advised by his prep school. Not sure if tutors have a magic wand! But seems like that's the way to go. We can't afford prep and tutoring and don't believe in tutoring so not paying for it in principle.

I’m sure he is! I think 8+ is super competitive, with 40 places available at those schools.
I am sure he will have a bright future!

SWlondonmum123 · 11/01/2025 18:31

Anyone here doing the 8+ spj second round next week?

ababyhamster · 11/01/2025 20:43

We are! Still feels like a long shot with only 18 places... does anyone have any hints / tips?

SWlondonmum123 · 11/01/2025 21:37

Yes! It certainly does! What day do you have yours? We’re Wednesday PM!
i was reading through the current 7+ group, apparently there was no creative writing this year but I find that hard to believe…

ababyhamster · 11/01/2025 22:20

Wow I assumed it was one group a day not morning and afternoon! How many do we think went through? 40?

SWlondonmum123 · 12/01/2025 07:33

Well in the email they sent us previously it did say that they take 50 to second round. So I’m assuming group sizes of 8-9 per am or pm session

Superstar88 · 15/01/2025 15:04

Finally all exams are over! Good luck everyone ) is it going to be Friday that the final offers are sent out?

SWlondonmum123 · 15/01/2025 18:03

Yep, so glad it’s over! Hope it went well for everyone :)

Cadeaux · 16/01/2025 10:34

@ababyhamster @SWlondonmum123 how did your DS feel about the second round?

SWlondonmum123 · 16/01/2025 10:46

He said it was ok, seems to have enjoyed it, he came down with a fever about an hour after it all finished! Haven’t managed to get a huge amount out of him since but he did say that it was better than the kings one and that he enjoyed it more. How about your boys?

ababyhamster · 16/01/2025 10:47

He had a lot of fun and was really happy whatever that might mean.

I heard there was some math, some creative writing and building some lego. How about you?

Cadeaux · 16/01/2025 10:54

Mine enjoyed it as well but said there was extremely challenging math

SWlondonmum123 · 16/01/2025 10:58

Mine said some of the maths was challenging. Creative writing was good, teacher came round and commented on the boys work. They build a robot monster or something then they had to use that for their creative writing piece. End they had circle time with some questions. That’s the feedback I got

PizzaPastaPannaCotta · 17/01/2025 11:31

Good luck for the upcoming 8+ results!

Superstar88 · 17/01/2025 13:14

Cadeaux · 17/01/2025 18:57
