what does level 4/5 mean in year one?

Hi at our parent's meeting last night my dd year one teacher said she is level 4/5 for maths and literacy. I asked 'what does that mean - is it good' and she said - 'it doesn't really matter yet - it will mean more in year 2'.

I think she is doing well so im just curious - has anyone else hear this?

I would be amazed if she could be a level 5 in year 1. She should be about a 2b at the end of YEar 2.

thanks cazzy - what are these levels - are they set by the government or the school? Do you get told about them at your school?

I would be amazed if a year 1 pupil was level 4 or 5! Most pupils are level 4 at the end of year 6. If she is genuinely level 5, she must be doing vastly different work to the rest of the class.

You beat me to it piffle. Was just abotu to add that. Is she on stage 4 or 5 of oxford reading tree?

I can post some level 5 maths questions if you want to check whether that is what the teacher really meant or not

she is doing the same work as the class - she is not particularly advanced - she is doing well with reading and gets books from year 2 so i think piffle may be right

she is going to be set more challenging maths but i dont think to year 6 level!

im not sure what oxford reading tree is - they have dot books - the books have stickers in of different colours that get harder as you progress

yes please popsycal - it would be interesting - i am sure she isn't doing anything particularly different but you never know - ive only spoken to her teacher twice!

I think you need to ask the teacher to clarify hat she meant then as to me, level 4/5 refers to National CUrriculum levels and unless your dd is extremely bright and well ahead of her Year 1 peers, the teachers most probably is not refering to NC levels...

Level 6 maths would be for a child in a secondary school. Did she mean Foundation Stage scale 4/5?

DS1 was working up to 4 years ahead in maths was on level 5 aged 7. He is astounding.
He is yr9 now and is on level 8 but was unable to go beyond level 6 at primary. Infact getting level 6 was like extracting blood from the teachers.

Piffle - level 6 is even harder to get teachers to agree to now that the extension paper is no more......and tbh, unless like your ds who is pretty exceptional from what I understand, it is own seen occasdinally in primary school. IME of a pretty 'strong' catchment area too

I joked about becoming one to the head of Maths, he said I'd employ you like a shot... despite knowing shag all about my quals (degree in Russian and politics LOL)

I think it is ORT level 4-5, which is about average for year 1 is it not?
