DS (7) desperate to go as Harry Potter. So, Granny is knitting a Gryffindor scarf and we have face paint for the scar, but I'm a bit stuck for the glasses. Is there anywhere on the high street that might sell clear harry potter type glasses? I live near York if anyone has any specific suggestions!

Arthur Dent also easy.

Kbear · 02/03/2008 21:15

Count your blessings people, my DS is going as a humpback whale, from the Snail and the Whale.

Gawd help me.

carol3 · 02/03/2008 21:17

have a snow queen so far but ds is trying to convince me to let him go as dr who

IndigoMoon · 02/03/2008 21:19

dd is going as dora the explorer, i know she is more tv but she does have books. do you think this will be OK??????????

cornsilk · 02/03/2008 21:20

lol at humpback whale! My ds suggested a flanimal but he's got no chance!

MorocconOil · 02/03/2008 21:27

Last year I went to a charity shop and got some glasses for DS's HP costume.

I've got to sort out 2 costumes by thursday DS 2 is adamant he's going as Superman which is on a par with Dora.

Posey · 02/03/2008 21:31

Ds wants to go as Mr. Strong so am off to find a large box to paint red tomorrow.
Dd who is in y6 feels she's a bit old for this so is going as The Illustrated Mum. What fun we will have will a load of temporary tattoos!

islandofsodor · 02/03/2008 21:51

We are doing Clara from The Nutcracker as dd's favourite book at the moment is a book of ballet stories.

janeite · 02/03/2008 21:55

The Illustrated Mum sounds a great idea.

Mine are all too old for this now and I really miss it. I LOVE fancy dress!

Posey · 02/03/2008 22:03

janeite, I can't take credit for that idea. Did a search on here for ideas and thought it was more age appropriate!

seeker · 03/03/2008 10:00

My ds is going as Hiccup Horrendous Haddock 111 - if I can find a viking helmet anywhere!

seeker · 03/03/2008 10:02

lennygrrl - we did Mildred Hubble one year - trouble was everyone thought she was Hermione. Not sure how you can make sure everone knows she's Mildred - my dd had the name in big letters on her school bag, but people still didn't get it!

filthymindedvixen · 03/03/2008 10:04

seeker, my ds is obsessed with Haddock at the mo!

If I had a girl, I'd dress her as Arrietty from The Borrowers. Lots of funky layering in brwons and reds and stripes

barnstaple · 03/03/2008 10:10

School has told us that it has to be a Roald Dahl character; none of us like RD so we are stumped. DD will go as Lady Grace (Lady Grace Mysteries) and b**r the school!

dirtygertiefromnumber30 · 03/03/2008 10:11

my ds went as burglar bill last year (and won best costume!). sooo easy, stripy top, old man's cap, old pe bag with SWAG written across it and I made an eye mask from card and elastic.

when is it? ds' school havent mentioned it this year (although they are renowned for sending the letter home the night before an event!)

Dandi · 03/03/2008 13:59

dgfn30 - it's this Thursday. We did get the letter on Friday - not bad for the dcs' school, though the fancy dress shop in York said they had sold out of harry potter stuff, having had a run on thurs & fri [cross face]. i did get some 'schoolboy glasses', though. i've just spent more than I had planned on velvet for a cloak for dd, who's going as the Queen of Hearts, and I though it'd be cheaper to make your own stuff

Ds1 is going as a black and white cat from Disney's Aristocats.

DS2 has to dress up every day this week and is going as the same cat (Mog) tomorrow, a builder from Dig Dig Digging book, Lunar Jim and Buzz lightyear!!

wheresthehamster · 03/03/2008 21:11

I've just been told

Luckily dd3 has decided on the Where's Wally character and we have found something suitable in 5 mins so no time to get really cross/speechless/desperate for once.

LyraSilvertongue · 03/03/2008 21:13

DS1 is going as Harry Potter. We're just going to draw the glasses and scar on with black eyeliner.

Crystaltipsandalaistar · 03/03/2008 22:13

This thread has reminded me i need to think of something for my 2 little boys. I'm sure girls are easier to dress up...
