Yr 2 SATS scores WWYD?

Hi all...
DC did yr 2 SATS recently and had school report last week week and there were no SATS scores included. I knew there was a possibility the school wouldn't include them but I can't help but feel disappointed they didn't just include them for the curious parents like myself.

They included the yr 1 phonics screening test results last yr so I really cannot see why this would be any different???

I am aware that many parents are anti-SATS etc. and that's fine so really not after a debate about whether young kids should be tested etc..The school was great at keeping it low key and stress-free and we didn't discuss it at home unless DC mentioned it (kids are smart! lol).

Speaking to other mums...some have said they plan to ask the teacher for their child's results...not sure if they have but I'm a little apprehensive as don't want to be seen as "that parent"!

WWYD....?

Do you mean the test score or the teacher assessment level? They have to share teacher assessment level, but may not share test score as it only forms a small part of the teacher assessment judgement. I’m sure they will share if asked but it doesn’t really mean much as the assessment level is drawn from their work. Even moderators focus on books etc for evidence.

Test score. I have the teacher assessment level. I know the tests are just a moment in time snapshot but I cannot see why sharing a phonics test result which is a snapshot and doesn't tell you much about overall literacy skills is any different to sharing SATS results which they've pretty much spent the best of yr 2 prepping for!

Our school doesn’t give out sats results for yr2. I don’t think that’s uncommon.

pinktulippetal · 14/07/2023 22:09

Also...I think that it tells you quite a lot. The tests cover the whole curriculum so I think it's really useful to know whether your child has been able to retain the info and use it.

Yeah I think you're right. It seems to be the norm but I have seen some threads on here where parents were given the results as standard. I just don't see why not...they give the yr1 phonics, yr 4 timetables and yr 6 sats so why not yr 2? Any teachers around...sure there's a good enough reason!

Ours doesn’t give them out but based on something else that happened at school, I wonder if an SAR would work?….If you were so inclined. It may not go down favourably though. Can you just ask the teacher?

I would’nt think badly of you for asking. Not like the parent that asked if we could change the colour of the chocolate egg her child got given at Easter……

Italiandreams · 14/07/2023 22:29

It’s probably because the test scores and the teacher assessment may not completely match, the teacher assessment is based on a framework, teachers are supposed to have 3 or 4 pieces of evidence to show the child has met each standard. The test may provide one piece of evidence, or it may be they didn’t do so well on the test but there is plenty of evidence else where they have met the standards. I’m sure if you ask they will share, but it’s probably just to save a lot of parents questioning every judgement. Teacher assessment are a lot of work in Year 2 .

Haaha!

At most I would just email the teacher via the office and ask...nothing too formal and wouldn't push if they said no....but I'll probably just leave it tbh. I'm really scared of being viewed as being difficult!

It will bug me for a little while though! 🙈

Ah ok. That makes total sense. Thanks for that.

Ask for them.

I did. I said I had absolutely no hidden agenda, I’d just like to know. They were happy to give them to me.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 14/07/2023 23:17

Sorry, I meant to post that reply on theKS2 SATs thread.

lavenderlou · 14/07/2023 23:20

I'm a Year 2 teacher. The reported results are teacher assessment so SATS results are not routinely given out. You can request them though. As PP said there is a teacher assessment framework with multiple statements that have to be evidenced. SATS results form one part of the evidence.

LittleScottieDog · 14/07/2023 23:20

Why is it so important?

You know they do end-of-term assessments in reading and Maths in every year group, right? Are you going to ask for that data each time every year of primary school? Because the Year 2 assessments are no different, really. If you want the Year 2, I'm surprised you haven't also asked for the Year 1 last year.

spanieleyes · 15/07/2023 06:15

The test doesn't cover the whole curriculum, just elements within it. Which is why it is the teacher assessment that is reported and not the test score. For example, the reading test covers comprehension but not fluency or prosody which are key elements of assessment in Year 2( if the school is moderated, the moderators often don't even want to know the test score but they do want evidence that the child can read fluently at 90 words per minute without errors- not something you can gauge from a test score! )
You can certainly ask the school for them and they should be happy to provide them but they certainly aren't expected to!

Summerslimtime · 15/07/2023 06:20

Of course you want the SATs results! We're completely against the testing and so is the school, but the kids worked so hard and they want their results. Or are you talking about something else??

spanieleyes · 15/07/2023 06:55

They're 6! Most of them don't know they have completed the tests, they just did a " special job" with the teacher and got extra playtime. They don't want or need the test results, it's just parents who do!

Perfectweatherforducks · 15/07/2023 07:00

You can absolutely request them and would not be seen as 'that parent'. I don't understand why they aren't routinely given out, it's a good snapshot for parents to see how their child is doing.

The op is talking about the y1 tests which any decent school will keep as low key as possible. Not the y6 ones.

usernotfound0000 · 15/07/2023 07:10

Our school didn't give them out but we were told if we wanted to know then we could ask, so I would suggest asking the teacher.

Italiandreams · 15/07/2023 07:41

@Perfectweatherforducks the teacher assessments are given out, which is a much better indication of where they are

prawnring · 15/07/2023 07:58

We got reports yesterday including teacher assessment and the SATS results. I absolutely would have requested the results if they hadn't been on the report.

Retrievemysanity · 15/07/2023 08:00

Have you had parents evening yet? Ours were available then if we wanted them.

kezziegrey · 15/07/2023 08:05

My child's school don't give them out either and it seems strange. He doesn't really care so I know I shouldn't but I feel that all that effort (they did quite a few practise ones beforehand and he was really quite nervous) and then to have no result at the end of it is odd, I don't care, his teacher assessments are very good, so no hidden agenda, just curious! Our head is very anti giving them out, someone asked last year and they did get them but after a meeting about why they routinely don't and a lot of hassle so I can't be bothered to go through that.

Last parents evening was way before SATS. Only get two per year.
