Yr 2 SATS scores WWYD?

Hi all...
DC did yr 2 SATS recently and had school report last week week and there were no SATS scores included. I knew there was a possibility the school wouldn't include them but I can't help but feel disappointed they didn't just include them for the curious parents like myself.

They included the yr 1 phonics screening test results last yr so I really cannot see why this would be any different???

I am aware that many parents are anti-SATS etc. and that's fine so really not after a debate about whether young kids should be tested etc..The school was great at keeping it low key and stress-free and we didn't discuss it at home unless DC mentioned it (kids are smart! lol).

Speaking to other mums...some have said they plan to ask the teacher for their child's results...not sure if they have but I'm a little apprehensive as don't want to be seen as "that parent"!

WWYD....?

As many have said, the tests are only 1 piece of information and do not provide evidence for all the required assessment statements. Teacher assessment is huge especially if you’re moderated!!

In practice, this means a child can score very high marks, but not achieve greater depth or in extreme circumstances an expected level. An example of this would be maths, where the paper didn’t have any questions linked to telling the time.

In contrast, a child could score lower marks on the test, but have tonnes of class based evidence showing they can do it.

Summerslimtime · 15/07/2023 08:38

The op is talking about the y1 tests which any decent school will keep as low key as possible. Not the y6 ones

Makes sense 😝, I'll go back to sleep!!

Hihosilver123 · 15/07/2023 08:44

Just ask for them. You’re entitled to see them. We send them out to all parents.

pinktulippetal · 15/07/2023 10:21

Thanks for all the responses! Glad lots of you are on the same page with me!

Yes I know it's just a snapshot and appreciate the scores may not reflect the teacher's final judgement, but given so much effort goes into it (they literally spent months doing practice papers with the kids) it just bugs me to be left in the dark about it. I am happy with DC's report and progress so I'm literally just being nosey!

I’d ask for them. We were given the scores and the actual test papers so we could go through any gaps in knowledge at home.

useitorlose · 15/07/2023 12:40

The school have given you all that they are required to give you. Anything else is at their discretion.

OneForTheRoadThen · 15/07/2023 12:54

I asked for them and the school emailed them over. It never occurred to me that they would think I was 'that' parent! Why don't you just ask?

Wow that's amazing!! Wish our school did that 😪

This is what gov.uk website says....

Key stage 1 test results
Some schools may choose to report test results to parents, alongside the
overall teacher assessment judgements. If your child’s school does not report
KS1 test results alongside the teacher assessment judgements, you can request to see them.

Think I will. General consensus seems to be...
Most schools don't automatically share...but lots of you saying to just ask. So I'm prob gonna go for it!

I’ve just emailed to request them. I have a feeling the teacher assessment is a bit cautious, so I’m intrigued to see the actual results of the test.

The results of the SATs in year 2 only form part of the final assessment. So even if the SATs result is higher, the teacher assessment based in all work done, with the test only being one aspect of this, is the real one. The SATs don't cover everything needed to make it totally reliable.

gertrudemortimer · 15/07/2023 15:22

My dc school didn't hand them out but the teacher has them all in a folder and just gives them out as when she is asked. She didn't seem phased by people asking so I wouldn't worry about been 'that' parent.

QuillBill · 15/07/2023 15:28

You can get papers from the previous years on .gov so you could always go through one with her over summer if you want to get an idea of how she is answering actual questions.

emmama2 · 15/07/2023 15:43

You can request to see them. They don't have to be included with the teachers report but we asked as we where curious and like you wanted to see where the gaps where in DD learning. Pleasantly surprised with DD results.

What makes me most sad about this is kids doing practise papers for months! Why?!?! They are six and seven!

I know what you mean but I really don't want this thread to turn into a debate about that though. As in my OP....it was kept low key and the kids were not upset or stressed by any of it. I suspect most didn't realise it was practise papers but my DC is very observant so notices these things!

I asked last year for my son - our school was happy to provide it

Whitewolf2 · 18/07/2023 11:07

Definitely request them, I’m sure the school would provide them if asked.
We were just given 2 scores - 94 for reading and 104 for maths. I was disappointed our child fell below the average for reading, she’s not a keen reader by any means but am concerned she’s so behind.. I just hope she can catch up! She is July born but I know that doesn’t impact all kids.

Summer1912 · 18/07/2023 11:21

White wolf
Maybe get the kid to have a go atcone of the previous sats papers at home for reading and maybe maths. Then you can see where issues are.
My eldest has come up from 102 at ks1 to 113 at ks2. Her friend has done similarly. And thats moved into top 10%.
Our school dont practise for ks1 so the results are frankly a lot of crap.
Also you cant accurately test a 7yo.
Dc2 has got 111 at ks1 on maths amd we did do some practise. And that doesnt even give dc exceeded on report!
It is not in a school interest for them to do well at ks1. Was it affects progress scores.
Just focus on a move towards reading chapter books.
