Phonics screening

Hi. Does anyone know if you get results for a yr1 phonics screening test? My DS had his the week before he broke up from school. I just wanted to ask does anyone know if I would get a report before I ask his teacher how he got on. I know each school may differ but just after an idea before asking. Thanks.

It won’t be the official test, it’s not done until Summer Term

MyHaloSlipped · 02/03/2022 16:23

Ah ok, thank you. My DS asked me today if I knew whether he passed or not so before I approached the school I just thought I'd ask if I would get a report in the next few weeks or not.

We got a sheet of paper with the results on but it was quite a long while after. I didn't even realise they'd done any screening. Confused Ours was done in year 2 because of covid. Apparently DS knew he'd done it but never told me.

BendingSpoons · 03/03/2022 08:10

At DDs school, when they do the practise ones, they put a sticker in their book log with their score on. The pass mark is usually 34 although they don't have to be scoring that yet.

sherbsy · 08/03/2022 13:16

I suspect that was just a practice test since the real ones are in June! Why not show him some of the phonics screening tests from the past and see if he recognises the one he took?

That would be making rather a bigger deal of it than is necessary. Also, if the teacher wants to do another practice, the "made-up words you've never seen before" aren't going to work so well if he's already seen them.
TheHoptimist · 08/03/2022 18:02

It isnt a test. It is a screening check to identify children who may have specific literacy difficulties.

The purpose of the phonics screening check will be to confirm that all children have learned phonic decoding to an age-appropriate standard.

Children who have not reached this level should receive extra support from their school to ensure they can improve their decoding skills, and will then have the opportunity to retake the phonics screening check.

raspberryjamchicken · 08/03/2022 18:03

If your school does an end of year report, they will usually be included in that. As PP said, the screening check isn't until June.

It's 32.

We had ours in year 1, was told it'd be repeated this year in year 2 but wasn't. We got the score a few weeks ago, out of 40

Was this last year? The phonics screening check was cancelled and moved to the Autumn Term of Year 2. I am a Year 2 teacher. I have the results verbally to any parents who came to parents evening but won't be sending out the official results until the end of year report as those children who didn't reach the pass mark will redo the check in June of this year.
raspberryjamchicken · 08/03/2022 18:22

gave the results. Can't type today.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/03/2022 20:39

Yes. If they've redone it then they've done so without mentioning it to parents. Which is fine. I had a letter through the post with his score, average score for the Borough, by sex etc.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/03/2022 20:40

I might be imagining by post. But I have the letter

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 08/03/2022 20:41

Makes me sad a 5/6 year old is asking if they passed. Our school system is so flawed

MyHaloSlipped · 08/03/2022 22:27

Thank you everyone. I'm not worried, he is picking up lots and absorbing like a sponge bless him. It just threw me when he asked if I knew if he passed. I would hate to think he is worrying about things like this at 6. He doesn't seem bothered now. Must have been an on the day question. I have been told by the school today they are having a parents evening before HT so should find out more then. This will be our first one so looking forward to see how he is doing. Thank you everyone for all your help.

@raspberryjamchicken the printed sheet with the formal result in says year 1 2021,do you reckon they've still resat it?

The DfE issues a statutory timetable which stated that Y2 children must carry out the screening test in the second part of the Autumn Term of 2021 as it was postponed from June 2021. So your school have either not followed this, which I've never heard of before, or they just didn't change the date on the sheet correctly. You could ask.

raspberryjamchicken · 09/03/2022 12:46

The official guidance says it was statutory to administer it during the second half of the Autumn Term. Not sure why any school would have done it last summer as then their pupils stood less chance of completing it correctly as they had missed some of the phonics learning time.

The check will take place during week beginning June 6th for children in Y1.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/03/2022 12:52

It states "statutory... Year 1... Summer term. Children who did not take the check in year 1... take the check again at the med of year 2.

I mean it doesn't matter I'm just curious no w

Some children don't ever learn to read using phonics so unless your child is struggling to read I wouldn't worry about it. My DD failed her phonics test but could read books way ahead of her peer group. Her teacher said she was a sight reader but government insists on phonics so the tests have to be done! She was and still is a complete bookworm.

Looks like they have probably done it in the Autumn Term but they have a results letter template saved from previous years which they haven't bothered to modify!

The Screening Check is there to identify those children who are struggling so that they may be supported.

They cancelled it in summer 2021 as they had missed so much learning due to covid. It was taken in the Autumn and any who didn't meet the pass mark will be retested in the summer term.
