School place acceptance missed.

Hello, I already posted this in chat- but was advised to post it here too, as this is where all the experts hang out. Please let me know your experiences/ advise even if it is negative.

We only applied for 1 junior school for our child. The same one their sibling attends. We were offered it. My husband did all the application. He assumed as we only put one choice it would be automatically assumed we’d accepted. This is obviously not the case and he missed an email yesterday saying please remember to accept your school place. Obviously we’ll get in tough choices with them on Tuesday and plead our case- but now I’m terrified my child has lost their place at the school. Has anyone else been in this situation? How quick do they re allocate places?
Yes, I know I should have checked myself....but I thought he had it all under control. Have been busy with newborn.
Am beside myself with worry.
Please, any advice from anyone knowledgable?

You should be fine. The LA should attempt contact a few times before removing the place.

Paperyfish · 01/05/2021 08:15

@Lougle thanks for swift reply! Have had email yesterday and week previous- but for the school not the council, so hopefully that doesn’t count?

But from the school

I'm in Scotland so it's totally different here. If you only apply to one school, what happens if it's filled by kid higher on the list than your child? Where do they send your kid? Just any school with space (so the worst ones no one actually chooses?).

Would that mean that even if you would have been high than someone else in a better school, you wouldn't be placed there because you didnt put it down as an option?

Sorry to derail but I'm just curious!

Good luck with your space. It was be mad of them to remove it after just one reminder email right before a long weekend.

themalamander · 01/05/2021 08:17

He ignored 2 emails? And now you're having to fix it for him?

Paperyfish · 01/05/2021 08:20

@themalamander apparently he “didn’t see them”. He works in IT. He is on his phone or computer constantly ( sometimes simultaneously). How his missed them is beyond me. He is good at his job and I’d normally describe him as intelligent and organised.

I don’t even care if he searches and finds this thread.

Of course. What's 'better' to you might be worse for someone else. You might think small schools are 'better' and I might hate them so I wouldn't consider them better at all.

I did this too OP and it was completely fine. They said they would have written and called first, not just whisked the place away. I'd mentally ticked it off as 'done' once we had the place as it was pretty much a certainty.

Paperyfish · 01/05/2021 08:32

@DonutsAllRound that’s reassuring you still got your place- thanks for sharing.

Yep, that's exactly what happens. If you only list one school, that's the only one that you'll be considered for, and if you're not high up enough in the admissions criteria to get a place, then you'll be put in the nearest school that has places available after everyone who applied has had their places allocated. There is nothing at all to lose by filling up all your choices, so it's generally always advised to do so and to include at least one school that you can be pretty sure of getting a place at (even if you're not keen on it, as it's better to be in a poor school round the corner than a poor school you have to travel miles to).

OP, despite the reminder emails, when was the actual deadline to accept the place? If that was only yesterday, I think you'll be fine as others have said, and the LEA will check with you before removing places.

prh47bridge · 01/05/2021 08:36

From the OP's other thread, it appears there have been two emails from the LA since the original offer. The LA has therefore met the requirements of the Admissions Code and can withdraw the offer.

Having said that, if the final deadline was yesterday it is unlikely the place has been reallocated so it should be possible to get this sorted on Tuesday. If the place has been reallocated, the OP is likely to be at or near the head of the waiting list so has a good chance of getting a place that way.

Paperyfish · 01/05/2021 08:36

@ChildOfFriday hi, the deadline was yesterday. We sent email at 7.30 this morning. I really hope so. Their sister goes to this school. All his class mates are going. We’ve told him he’s going. He’s excited to go. Dh will have to explain why he’s not going if it comes to it.

villagegirlatheart · 01/05/2021 08:39

This happened to us. My husband phoned as soon as we realised and was told not to worry, that they wouldn't have reallocated without contacting us first to confirm.

Earlgreyandcake · 01/05/2021 08:40

It's likely the place has already been offered - phone calls usually made on deadline day - parents at top of list would question why not

Paperyfish · 01/05/2021 08:41

@villagegirlatheart that’s good to hear! I hope is the same for us!

OP posts:
themalamander · 01/05/2021 08:43

@Earlgreyandcake

How could they make the calls on deadline day? So they call and offer the place to someone else at 5pm and then an email from the original parents accepting the place at 5.05pm? Wouldn't work.

roses2 · 01/05/2021 08:43

Call them also first thing Tuesday! I wouldn't wait for them to eventually read your email - that might be too late

Paperyfish · 01/05/2021 08:43

@Earlgreyandcake- hopefully they might leave it till Tuesday...I know I’m grasping at straws- but if we had till end of day Friday then surely they wouldn’t contact people Saturday morning? The offices are shut- we’ve already tried contacting them. Unless of course is an automated email that goes out to them? Anyone know when waiting list places are allocated?

OP posts:
Paperyfish · 01/05/2021 08:45

I will be Calling Tuesday am. Myself. Me.

OP posts:
Earlgreyandcake · 01/05/2021 08:47

Defends on deadline time. My sister got a call yesterday afternoon for place for my niece.

CornishTiger · 01/05/2021 08:51

@Earlgreyandcake that might have been because someone had actively declined their space though.

HolmeH · 01/05/2021 08:52

Ugh. Why don’t councils just all auto accept.. ours do. Surely 98% of parents do just accept what’s allocated and the ones who don’t will obviously be in touch ASAP. It seems daft.

That said, I’d never leave my OH to apply, he’s hopeless at any admin 🙈

Earlgreyandcake · 01/05/2021 08:54

That's true - I don't know the details

@TrendingHistory unfortunately it was the 30th. There really is no plausible reason I can think of for him not realising he needed to accept. What’s worse is he must have accepted our elder child’s infant and junior places and this child’s infant place....so he just.......didn’t.
