3+ 4+ 5+ 7+ Support thread 2020 (Mumteacher)

I know it’s a little later than usual but here it is! #letsdothis

In previous years I have started these threads to help and support all those involved in the independent school admissions process.

I wasn't going to start one this year as I know I would not be able to check back on it as regularly as I would like, which then defeats the purpose of the thread.

However, after numerous positive PM's about the threads I think it would be a shame not to start one where at least the hand holding can continue. 🤝

There are many many people who have been through the process and 'live to tell the tale' . There are also other tutors I know who read this thread and it would be great if you all could help and support and share your ideas👏🏼

I wouldn’t do specific stuff at all. We honestly do take into account their age and we want children that will thrive at our (selective) school not those that got in as they were artificially pushed and then can’t keep up without lots of additional support.

You can always tell the ones that will also get offers from KCS, St. Paul’s and WUS etc.... I find it sad how many schools some people put their children through at 7+, some children reel off lists of 7 or so schools they are sitting assessments for.

organiccoffee · 02/01/2020 16:38

trinity0097, interesting point, do you ever ask kids in interview whether they have offers from other school?

trinity0097 · 02/01/2020 17:49

We’re used to everything, from the screaming, wailing child who refuses to even enter the building to those angelic appropriately confident ones who you know you will offer a place to and everything in between!

(And before anyone fusses about the ones who refuse to come in, if they will come in for a standard taster day we can assess them then if the whole 7+ day is too much for them)

7plusquestionz · 02/01/2020 20:42

Does anyone have any advice for the UCS 7+ on Monday? Any previous experience or knowledge of the structure?
Is it true that most of the places go to existing kids from the pre prep that used to be the Phoenix?
Thanks

Manchester7 · 03/01/2020 17:06

Hi @7plusquestionz. Sorry, I cannot help with UCS info but I see there’s some info in last year’s thread which might help? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/primary/3380051-3-4-5-7-Support-thread-2019

Anyone sitting Highgate 3+? I know it’s the last year they are doing it. Some practical questions - anyone got in at 3+ with a kid that’s NOT potty trained and is wearing nappies at assessment? If it’s a big deal we have a medical reason I can mention but I don’t want to highlight it if it’s not a big deal...

mummyOnTheNet · 08/01/2020 13:32

@7plusquestionz: Regarding UCS, around half of the places go to the children from their pre-prep, but the rest are new intakes.

mumteacher · 09/01/2020 19:40

Highgate will expect a child to be nappy free by the time they start at the school. If you have a medical reason it’s usually advised to mention it to the school.

Morning everyone, hope all the kids are doing well in their exams and assessments. May I ask what time will NLCS inform for the 2nd round of assessment for 4+?
Thank you!

mumtoone2016 · 10/01/2020 10:09

I think the results for NLCS first round are due on Monday/Tuesday next week with the second round due later in the week itself.

flyingcutie · 10/01/2020 10:27

Thank you!

NLCS round 2 may contain a 1-2-1 ‘chat’ where topics could be anything from discussing a picture, what they had for breakfast and where milk comes from, to who is the funniest person at the circus.

Anyone has experience on Latymer Prep activity / interview round and can share some tips? TIA!

Leapfrog123 · 11/01/2020 17:25

Hello, when is the UCS pre prep (4+) first round? And any ideas what is expected in it?
Also anyone have experience of the Arnold House children’s interview?

mum179 · 13/01/2020 16:34

Anybody got their round 1 results from Channing?

mumtoone2016 · 14/01/2020 13:28

Anybody had habs first round today? My daughter was there today and she usually doesn't tell me much, so no surprise there. However, the only thing she told me today was that the girls dressed as Elsa and played together. I wonder if it actually happened or is it her way of making me order a costume for her??

dxbmom · 14/01/2020 15:26

@tonyand123 same pinch .. my daughter got called for St Helens 2nd round on Wednesday .. I spoke to few of my friends whose daughter got admission in reception last year and they said the below .. hope this helps to and other too.

  1. Asked her parents name (she should be able to tell full name)
  2. Askde her to write her name
  3. Did a Qand A on picture story
  4. asked her to draw some bird.
  5. asked her to play and hop :)

Has anyone else applied to Nothwood college for Girls would appreciate feedback on the school.

tonyand123 · 14/01/2020 15:30

Do you have any idea of how many children applied to St Helens, and how many got called back, and how many get offered a place?

From memory, I think they only give 12 places.. with 48 being given to their nursery.

Jumanjijungle · 14/01/2020 22:03

Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences. My daughter is going for NLCS second round (4+). Would you know what does a “group activity” mean there?

mumtoone2016 · 15/01/2020 14:23

Habs first round are out, we didn't get through...

flyingcutie · 15/01/2020 15:04

May I ask what's the second round of the channing s 4+ assessment might be?
Wish everyone good luck!
