DS1 starting big-school - Need help deciding on iron-on v sew on labels for uniform.

Found loads of web sites selling name labels for uniforms.

What do you all recommend? Iron on or sew-on?

I think sew-on ones look much more traditional and I think nicer but harder work - and I am worried iron on ones will peel off.

Can anyone advise?

I think the sew on ones look tatty when the stitches (inevitably) start to loosen, so have always had iron-on ones

I spent a whole afternoon ironing on labels onto DS's nursery clothes. They all came off in the first wash. Sew on I think.

Cash's sew-on name tapes! They look lovely, and I have found that sew-ons are really the only ones that stay put.

But do they really stay on?? I imagine them peeling up at the corners and eventually falling off and me resorting to sewing anyway.

I just write the name on with indelible ink - go over it if it starts to fade

In future years I may well biro names on - just now I am quite looking forward to doing it - a bit of a rite of passage I suppose.

not only do the eazy 2 name iron on ones stay on, but they are almost impossible to remove when you want to recycle the clothes. They literally melt into the fabric

show your ds how to sew them on & let him do them.

I use a combination of sew-on and iron-on labels. The sew-on ones I use for the 'big' things, like blazers, which are going to last longer, and the iron-on ones for socks etc. which don't matter really anyway.

Cash sew on . By the time you've ironed, cooeld ironed cooled, rioned ... you could have done the 6 or so stitches to sew them in !

I bought about 7,000 Cash's nametapes (or the right to such) reduced to 75% off in Mothercare before Ds1 was born. I got two packs. You have to fill it in and send off the leaflet, they send you the tapes. I think it was time-unlimited luckily. I got two sets as I didn't know what his surname was going to be.

Sewed them in the other day (not all 7,000) and they look smashing - sewed all round the edges it took a while but will stay put - and hopefully for younger brother too, when he goes to school. (He can be known by DS1's first name, I'm not doing all that again!)

!!! Each one took me about 10 minutes! About 45 stitches each looks nicer that way and

OH I feel proud!

(though if you have a girly girl do consider Cash's Super Tapes in pink or lilac with silver lurex lettering - they will love you forever.)

I find iron-on easier, but they do peel off after a bit.

Sew on would be better I assume, but the job would never get done round here, I just know it.

Lately I've been writing straight onto the label with a laundry pen. Effective, easy but not too impressive on the domestic goddess front. Mind you there's no danger of me losing that particular accolade in the first place .

I need to recycle clothes for DS2 who is a couple of years behind DS1.

My Mum said she got a bumper bunble of tapes with 'Matthew Surname James' on for my two brothes ( when they were little) so she could cut in the right place and not have to buy two sets.

Now you all come to mention it, I think she said cash's too!

if you fold in the irrelevant bit rather than cut you can use each tape twice...

(My parents cunningly gave my little sister a middle name with the same initial as my first name so things marked 'W.Badger' in permanent pen were easy to change to 'C.W.Badger' when handed down)

You mean you're supposed to cut off the foldy bits? I wondered why some of them weren't printed very central.
