DS1 starting big-school - Need help deciding on iron-on v sew on labels for uniform.

Found loads of web sites selling name labels for uniforms.

What do you all recommend? Iron on or sew-on?

I think sew-on ones look much more traditional and I think nicer but harder work - and I am worried iron on ones will peel off.

Can anyone advise?

you are meant to fold the ends under!

Thankyou Mrs. B. I can get back to my jigsaw now.

oh sorry mare, I thought 'big school' ment he was 11 or thereabouts!! Clearly my brain isn't properly in gear today. Would need extremely advanced fine motor skills for a 4yo.

The iron-on ones from the GLTC catalogue are very good - certainly I've had very few peel-off in the last two years (and we label socks too - at £7 a pair, you do!). Biro/pen does wash off and then you have to keep on checking everything to ensure that it isn't faded - no problem on stuff that is cheap to replace or has a short shelf-life (eg white polo shirts in nursery!).

I think sew-on look smarter, and have more kudos if you're aiming for super-mummy award

I do iron-on ones for the boys' primary, though did do sew-in for ds1's first school year at least (with some help from my mum -I'm very slow at sewing.)

I feel a deep-seated need to do sew-in when he starts his secondary in 13 months time ...better start sewing now I guess!

Snorkel- actually I just thought you were having a bad day with the kids!!

I like the iron on easy2name ones...you can also get them for luchboxes, shoes etc which I like...and they do a 20% fundraiser pack so I can donate to school PTA at the same time

need to order some more for dd

Clary · 10/08/2007 22:57

I have now used al 3 kinds of easy2name ones - iron-on ones that you can also sew in tend to peel off; coloured (reversible) iron on ones are great but only any use on light colours eg polo shirts, but not trouers, jumpers etc; white-backed iron on ones I have got for DS2 this time and they seem good tho have not washed them.

Only trouble is you can't take them off (if passing on clothes) but that's not an issue with ds2 anyway lol.

But yes writing on labels is good too.

Oh yes sticky labels from easy2name areFAB and really do last and last.

if using easy2name - don't forget to go through mumset link on discouts or shopping page. there is a code on there to get a 15% discount!

Is there any way of getting the iron on ones off as I want to ebay some clothes and name tapes are stuck in like glue.

Wheelybug · 13/08/2007 20:20

What a timely thread - a friend pointed out to me today I would have to label dd's stuff for pre-school. Now, I'm useless at sewing but am now determined to sew them as thats what i had but now can't decide between the Robert Woodhouse design (which is what we had as children - blue for db1 red for db2 and green for me (no3)) or the pink/silver which DD would love.

Need to get a grip I think (me that is - it is only preschool fgs).

Sew on imo look best and are always nice and clear for staff to see. When I help out at ds's school I can rarely make out handwritten labels in perm ink. I think sew on ones look really good and old fashioned in a good way.
But if you don't have the time anything is fine of course!
