Shoes on the wrong feet

Ds has just started Reception and is good at changing himself for PE but struggles with his shoes.Today he came home with his shoes on the wrong feet, I don’t know whether this is normal? Is it right to think that the teacher should check this? I am worried he might trip over or fall in the playground.

The class is very small so I think it’s possible for the teacher and TA to check surely?

Totally normal & usually clothes on back to front too for my DSs. They soon learn.

I'm a Reception class teacher. Today I had two children arrive at school with their shoes on the wrong feet. Did I mention it to their parents? No. It happens.

Quite normal. I have a lovely photograph of me in primary school in 1971 with my shoes on the wrong feet.

One of mine put her shoes on the wrong feet more often than the correct feet! I would have thought it would be at least 50:50.

Mine used to do that too. And I don't think it's teacher's responsibility to check.
Quite funny, but I really wondered if he didn't feel uncomfortable!

My DS2 did that for quite a while when starting school, he obviously couldn't feel that it was wrong so not uncomfortable for him. I am sure he will learn shortly

I regularly put my son's shoes on the wrong feet. Big deal. If he's uncomfortable, he will let me know or change them himself. It's part of growing up and learning so fine by me (my son also just started reception).

Do the half a sticker, or draw a smiley face - half in each shoe -with a sharpie.
We used to get buttons all misaligned on pe days. They all get there eventually.

DD2 still does this now - she has issues with tactile sensitivity so doesn't feel they're "wrong" at all. Now she'll respond to you saying "banana feet" and swap them over - but doing it herself... nope.

Couple of things that work for us. If the inside sole of the shoe is pale coloured, a sharpie and an arrow inside each shoe so that when they're on the floor the correct way around the arrows point together works (like -->

Once walked behind a yr1 child with entire uniform on backwards so the shoes thing is very normal.

It's normal. The teachers and TAs have a thousand other things to do and the children need to learn anyway. It's no big deal.

It may be annoying but it is part of being a reception child. They need to learn to do it themselves and the teacher and TA really do have other things to do. Ours may suggest a second look to a child if they spot something but they don't check all children all the time.

I'm a teacher in foundation stage and often kids put their shoes on the wrong feet or jumpers round the wrong way etc. etc.
If I notice I always tell them. (However a lot of the time they take the shoes off and put them back on the wrong feet :)) But I can't go around checking every child's shoes!!!

Definitely agree with the sticker thing!! And they just have to learn how to figure it out!

Normal. My DS had PE first thing in Reception. He would always come out of school with his polo shirt on backwards and the collar tucked inside. I figure teachers can't start redressing all of them so just ignore it. Parents will then work on it with the child, otherwise how will they know there's an issue?

2 yrs on and DS still puts his shirts on backwards and often refuses to correct it.

Best one was the time my DD came out of reception with her polo on backwards and her cardi on top. She looked like a vicar.

Her teacher apologised to me like I was going to be upset. Quite the opposite it was fabulous.

I used to draw half a picture in each shoe that lined up correctly if they were the right way around.

Don't do it anymore but DD actually mentioned yesterday morning she missed it and wants me to do it again.

I've done smiley faces, hearts, butterflies.

No, it is not the teachers job to go around inspecting children's feet. They have teaching and learning to get on with.

The best one was DD coming home with her jumper under her pinafore dress. I'm still not sure how she fitted the dress over. She's in year 6 now, and today had her first school swimming lesson. She came home with one sock on.

I'm a teacher.we just had a parents morning where we told parents we would like their help in encouraging their children become more independent in dressing / undressing themselves. We told the parents to please not worry if their kids came in with trousers on back to from our jumpers wrong way round etc etc as means the children have tried themselves.. Same goes with shoes..
In saying that if I notice shoes on the wrong feet I will praise child for putting their shoes on themselves and then help them change them over to the right feet.. But in a classroom full of kids sometimes you just don't notice (or you notice as you send them out the door to parents and by then it's too late!)

Quite normal.
Ds in reception, and still sometimes in year 1 was often shoes on the wrong feet.
However he consistently had:
shorts/sweatshirt on backwards and polo shirt/socks on inside out.
It was so common that I almost wondered if he did it on purpose.

It's when they come out of school barefoot you need to worry because they've lost their shoes
