Shoes on the wrong feet

Ds has just started Reception and is good at changing himself for PE but struggles with his shoes.Today he came home with his shoes on the wrong feet, I don’t know whether this is normal? Is it right to think that the teacher should check this? I am worried he might trip over or fall in the playground.

The class is very small so I think it’s possible for the teacher and TA to check surely?

there will be kids still doing that for many years, especially with school shoes as the shape of the toe on them and the growing room allowed in them will mean it won't actually feel much different if at all.

My grandson started reception a couple of weeks ago
On Mondays they have PE
He was fine
His friend cane out of school with :
No sweatshirt- his has the school logo on and he had worn it that day
Plain white polo shirt- the school polo shirts are white with the logo on, which is what he went into the classroom with
He is only small and has age 3 to 4 trousers. He came out in a pair 5/6 age, so they were massively long on him
His mom did check and he had his own pants and shoes and socks on
Rest of his uniform must have been someone else’s but then again someone else must be wearing his
She has checked each day...and it’s now 2 days later..and the missing 7niform has not turned up
Considering it was all brand new at the start of September she is not a happy bunny

oh we had one day in reception where my daughter who was very very tall and wore age 8-9 tights came out with tights round her knees. she had on age 3-4! apparently she had been telling them they weren't hers, hers had her name in etc but had been told to just put them on so she had. poor kid. We never found out who was tiny but in massive tights and we never saw her named ones again.

to be honest I think from a staff point of view in reception if they manage to get all the children to be wearing enough items of clothing then they see it as successful at this stage of the year.

Very normal. DD and friend used to do this on purpose because they thought it was funny. But assuming it is accidental sticker trick will sort it out. DS also managed to come home with his trousers on backwards regularly after PE even in yr 2 (even with zip and button fly!), despite putting them on right every single time in the morning. Go figure.

My son came home with shoes on wrong feet, pants back to front and t shirt inside out under his jumper. I found it hilarious! Kids that age don't care what they look like, nor do the teachers have time to check all 30 kids are suited and booted correctly. It's all part of the joys of hem growing up and teaching themselves to get dressed

This ^

It is down to you, as a parent to teach them to dress themselves.
You can do the sticker thing, as suggested upthread, or teach them to look carefully at their shoes, and the shape. Of course the little ones make mistakes, and, if the adults in school notice it, they will sort them out, but, no, they aren't going to inspect each child one by one - they have teaching to get on with.

If it makes you all feel better, my sister once went to school wearing her V neck jumper backwards. She was 15 at the time.

BackforGood · 20/09/2018 00:11

That reminds me, my sister went to school once with one navy and one black shoe on (similar enough when she got dressed in the half light in the morning, totally different once it got light at school).

She was the teacher Grin

When DS was in Primary School they didn't bother with getting them changed for PE for the first half term in YR as they knew they would spend more time getting changed than on PE!

Norestformrz · 20/09/2018 04:34

If you put it off until the second half term it still takes them half the lesson to get changed so you may as well begin from the start. OP as others have said it's easy for the teacher to miss one or two children with shoes on the wrong feet when working with a large group of children so it's best to teach your child how to get it right and to recognise their own clothes. I once had two boys go home in the wrong shoes, identical Clarke's but different sizes and wear them for over a week before one complained they hurt (they were 2 sizes smaller than his own).

My husband's managed to go to work with one trainer and one work shoe on before. Odd socks are a norm for me but that's just me being too lazy to match them.

DD’s Reception class had a fairly equal amount of boys and girls so they changed by putting them boys/girl/boy/girl next to each other. That reduced the danger of mixing uniform a lot as most girls do not wear trousers and boys not often cardigans. Also the shoes are different. They also learned fast to put socks into the shoes and fold the clothes and put them on a chair.

By half term it worked so that they actually did PE for the majority of the slot instead of just 15 minutes.

We had more issues that DD would take off her cardigan during the day as it was too warm in the classroom and forgot where she put it.
