How many parents' evening a year is normal?

At DC's school they get one early in the first term and one in the middle of the year. Is this what most primary school's do? I was sort of surprised not to have an end of year parents' evening.

Some schools do, some just give out the report and some do a sort of celebration of children’s work eve instead.

Pascha · 12/07/2018 11:14

Normal here to have one in autumn and spring and then after reports are handed out in summer, an optional short one just to discuss the report itself if there are any issues.

Clutterbugsmum · 12/07/2018 11:16

My dc's school do a meet the teacher at about 5 / 6 weeks which really isn't a parents meeting but a chance for you to speak to the teacher if there are any issues early in the school year. Then one before Christmas and the around Easter normally just after we get the reports.

EloiseMinch · 12/07/2018 11:43

Interesting. So it looks like our setup of one at about 5 / 6 weeks and then one at Easter is below the norm.

Clutterbugsmum Which reports do you get around Easter? We don't get anything written until right at the end of the year.

2 here. One with the child, one without. It's enough I think.

OiWhoTookTheGoodNames · 12/07/2018 11:49

We have one after about a month of school, one around Easter when a middle-year report comes out (although it's a fairly meaningless report as it's just a print of the traffic lighted assessment against the objectives for the year) and that's it. Very open door if you have concerns or need to discuss things other times of the year though.

Moana123 · 12/07/2018 11:49

We have one after October half term and one around Easter... and then an informal drop in date time in the last 2 weeks of school where you can go and talk to the teacher if you want to... works quite well

BluthsFrozenBananas · 12/07/2018 11:54

Our is the same, October and Easter. DDs in y5 and we had an extra one in the first half of the summer term to talk specifically about secondary schools and 11 plus entry. There’s also regular drop in sessions and you can make an appointment to see the teacher if you want something more formal.

ProfessorMoody · 12/07/2018 11:57

We do 2.

IStillDrinkCava · 12/07/2018 11:57

Ours is yours, just the report in the summer. You can still go and see the teacher after school informally though if you want to.

EloiseMinch · 12/07/2018 12:07

I don't really get much from the 2 minute chat in the playground surrounded by the other parents IStillDrinkCava sadly. I could arrange a special meeting with the teachers I suppose.

Regular drop in sessions sound amazing! How do they work? Is there just a time of day when you can go and see the school teachers?

Primary - 2 parents' evenings, 1 written report
Secondary- 1 parents' evening, 2 written reports
So basically one thing per term

Appuskidu · 12/07/2018 12:32

Most schools I’ve worked in have a parents evening in October and March, then reports and an Open evening where teachers are around to talk to whilst you look at their work in July.

Hersetta427 · 12/07/2018 12:36

We had a parents evening in winter and spring terms and this term we get a report so same as most people.

Clutterbugsmum · 12/07/2018 12:36

The Easter report is a simple one just where child is and which area's they are going to do or need improvement in and the second one is where the teachers write about the child as well. We get the same at the end of year plus the end of year levels.

2anddone · 12/07/2018 12:36

Primary-parents evening in November, drop in session after Easter, reports handed out before Easter holidays with option to make an appointment to discuss it if you feel it's necessary.
Secondary-report every half term (just a grade 1-4 on their attitude) followed by one parents evening...year 7 parent so unsure if we get a full written report but we haven't yet with 2 weeks to go!!

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 12/07/2018 12:38

We have two and a drop in afternoon to look at work

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 12/07/2018 12:39

We had an open afternoon. DS2 took me for a tour of the school, I had a chat with DD's teacher and we all took part in an artwork.

AugustRose · 12/07/2018 12:40

Ours has 2 - one in October and one in April and then the written report in July.

winterisstillcoming · 12/07/2018 12:41

We have one parents evening in autumn and one at Easter. We have written progress reports at the end of each term.

We also had a meet the new teacher evening which is brilliant. We go over their report with their new teacher and anything we can be working on at home over the holidays. For dc1 we talked about building his resilience and vocabulary and for dc2 to practice sitting still at a desk. It was a good opportunity to let the new teachers know about little things about my children that make a big difference.

Norestformrz · 12/07/2018 16:57

Legally schools must provide one parents evening per year. Some offer more but they don't have to.

SmallestInTheClass · 12/07/2018 21:08

Primary school, 2 per year.

Chrisinthemorning · 13/07/2018 06:28

We have one a term now. I think that’s new, last year we had 2 and just reports in the summer term.
