Roald Dahl Dress Up Day - HELP PLEASE!!!!

oompaloompaland · 05/09/2016 12:56

You can tell that you're back at school, when the first letters come out about the latest dressing-up initiative. To celebrate Roald Dahl's 100th anniversary, the school are doing a dress-up day. DD is 10. Has anyone any suggestions please as to what we can do? I've got a week to pull something together (am reasonably handy and could make something if I had any ideas, but am clueless). Would really like to avoid Matilda if at all possible. Thank you.

Nice-ish clothes, holding a golden ticket.

Et voila.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 05/09/2016 12:59

Any old clothes and a bottle of dubious looking marvellous medicine?

GiddyOnZackHunt · 05/09/2016 13:00

Sorry misread as ds but still...

oompaloompaland · 05/09/2016 13:01

BRILLIANT! Love them. Thank you.

Nighty, and pigtails, go as Sophie from the BFG. Recent film launch might mean that several others have the same idea though... Smile

TheSpottedZebra · 05/09/2016 13:04

I think you can cross dress as Rd characters! My DD has been as George before, as that was her favourite book.

Black clothes + witches hat?

Long dress /nightie + glasses for Sophie from the BFG?

Mouse /fox etc if you have the bits to hand?

Roald Dahl - as well as being quite a decent writer (ahem), is excellent for dressing up.

Veruca or Violet from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ?

A peachGrin

Blueisthemagicnumber · 05/09/2016 17:15

My ds is going as Alfie from Esio Trot, believe it or not this was the easier option as his previous request was for a pelican from Giraffe, Pelly and me.

Idliketobeabutterfly · 05/09/2016 18:17

I was going to say Sophie too.

Growingpeopleme · 05/09/2016 21:40

I reckon Violet could be quite fun.

PoloZolo · 05/09/2016 21:49

An enormous crocodile?

EccentricPickle · 05/09/2016 21:53

A blue dress, bow in hair, get her to carry a book - Matilda.

Long, green shirt to make a dress, brown belt, knee high socks, clumpy shoes and hair in severe bun - Miss. Trunchbull.

EccentricPickle · 05/09/2016 21:55

Or maybe brown shirt for Miss. Trunchbull - her dress is kind of military style.

DD went as her for Roald Dahl day once and she wore my military jacket with a cushion up it to make her look fat.

EccentricPickle · 05/09/2016 21:56

Sorry, I missed that you were trying to avoid Matilda!

oompaloompaland · 06/09/2016 09:59

These are all wonderful (including the Matilda one) - thank you everyone for the suggestions. Will start scouring our wardrobes to see what we can cannibalise!

DD wanted to be Mrs Fox from Fantastic Mr Fox.

DO NOT search Ebay for "Mrs Fox dressing up" in front of your child

BeaLola · 07/09/2016 19:57

I think all these sound great. In addition Oompa Loompa or mr wonky based on Johnny deep version ?

Kathsmum · 07/09/2016 20:01

Verruca definitely, basically party type clothes, curl hair, make golden ticket (or print off internet). Personally prefer the purple version but looks more work!

LillianaVess · 08/09/2016 17:17

I'm 32 and I remember dressing up in primary school! I went as George I wore jeans and carried a saucepan!

Cinnamon12345 · 08/09/2016 17:19

The twits, you go straight from bed, with a bit of extra dirt..

BestZebbie · 08/09/2016 17:32

Vaguely 1950s boy clothes (shirt, shorts, knee socks), carry a dog toy pheasant or a bag of raisins for Danny Champion of the World.

Talcott2007 · 08/09/2016 20:15

Bruce Boggtrotter from Matilda - send her with an enormous chocolate cake!!

Hoppinggreen · 08/09/2016 21:07

Last year my DD went as a fox. Black leggings, orange tshirt, tail and ears .
As another poster said do NOT search fox costumes online with your DC!!

FarelyKnuts · 08/09/2016 21:10

Oh god we have this too. Next Tuesday. I have a small dark haired 7 year old. She will be going as matilda I fear Grin
