What do these scores mean re Year 2 child ?

What do these levels mean for a bright but very anxious about school 6 yo in year two.

According to the paperwork....

Stage 20 reading (should be between 21 to 28)

Spelling Blue (should be yellow or white)

Phonetics phrase 3 (should be between 4 to 6)

As a parent this looks like my child is failing across the board.....

Teacher said the change of curriculum, means everyone in the class is the same and everyone will be caught up by Christmas.

....so is this a cause for concern or not ?

It looks really confusing! I click thinking 'ah yes I've just done Y2 parents evening - I get levels..'

So seems slightly low on reading, how on earth are you to decode a coloured spelling system?, and slightly low on phonics.

The key question is, when they say 'should be' is that should be now or should be at the end of KS1?

Is the teacher concerned?

Teacher not concerned and tbh I am not doing anything about these scores...I just wanted to understand them.

I have a list of the colours. The colours mean he should be 2 or 5 levels higher than he currently is iyswim.

A different teacher said the children should be in the middle band by now.

I. E.

Reading 20 should be 23 to 24
Phonetics phrase 3 should be phrase 5
Spelling Blue should be white (5 levels higher)

But that looks worse...so I had the maximum scores on my OP.

Phonics phase 3 probably refers to Letters and Sounds but would indicate that your child didn't meet the standard of the Year 1 Phonics Check - so that should have been reported to you at the end of Year 1.

Reading 29 looks like PM Benchmarking - a quick Google shows 20 as a 2c, which doesn't seem to correlate to the phonics phase at all....

We were told last year that he hadn't exceed his targets (as he was predicted to do earlier last year as he is bright) but had done fine and the school had no worries...exactly what DH was told last night.

Agree with Feenie reading levels look like PM benchmarking /reading recovery (so school not using phonic schemes as per curriculum) and phase 3 Letters and Sounds - approx the stage a current reception child should be at in Autumn term (Y2 children should be working in phase 6)

I will recheck the phrase group...it doesn't sound like he should still be in phrase 3.

They recently recoded all the reading books from colours to numbered levels.

So is the reading level ok or low?

He says phrase 3 but unsure if upper or lower group (they have two groups for Phonetics phrase 3)

No longer worried, as I checked with a friend of mine who's child is extremely bright and she is only just on the scales. See how things progress this year.

Did you check the phonics phase with the teacher because phase 3 would be two years behind at this point in year 2

From my (limited) understanding, all state primary schools are having a 'transition year' from the NC levels, so devising/buying in other assessment systems.

It sounds like you need to ask the teacher/phase leader firstly to explain what assessment systems the school is using, and secondly whether you child is where they should be/making expected progress and if not what interventions are/will be put in place.

Children in Y2 and Y6 are still following the old curriculum and being assessed using the old levels.

I didn't check with the teacher...I will do.

Going to dig out the last report from last year too.

Right had a quick check with one of his teachers and yes, he is still in phase 3. I said something about moving him up. Teacher said not to worry as they had years 3 and 4 pupilsin phase 3 !

Now I am really starting to worry. I know two year one children and i have checked with their mothers and they are both in phase 4.

I know they are being reassessed in December and ifheisnot moved up at that point, I will make an appointment for DH to go in (I am too busy doing two sets of nhs appoitments for DS and DD3 atm, I can't deal with all the school stuff too.)

As a literacy coordinator and SENCO I would be horrified if any of our KS2 pupils were working on phase 3! Sorry OP but I would be concerned if it were my child.

Phase 4 in Y1 is behind! Phase 3 in Y3 or Y4 is very behind.

Pants, what can we do ?

DS already really hates school and I struggle to get him there every day.

He is highly anxious and doesn't sleep well.

School think he is fine and just like the other children in the class but I think he is masking. He really struggling with Social rules and behaviour.

And now this report, I have trusted the school so much..maybe I was wrong to take their word that everything was alright. :(

Just checking....There is only one set of phonics phases ? No chance our school is working on a different system.

Not sure about the reading or spelling as it sounds like they're specific school schemes. However, I teach y2 and the majority of the class are on phase 6. I have taught previous classes that wee still on phase 5 at this stage. Phase 3 is roughly what you'd be teaching y1 around now so fairly behind.

If be questioning the school as to what they are doing to support him and move him forward.

Different phonics programmes will have different names for the "stages" they expect children to work through, so phases, sets, groups etc but generally the sounds covered are in roughly the same order ( with a few exceptions!) So phase 1 of a phonic scheme would be similar in content to set 1 of a different scheme but not exactly the same.
If you can recall any recent sounds your DS has been learning we could identify which phase/set/group it might be!

I would be very concerned if Year 1 were at phase 3 now.
