What do these scores mean re Year 2 child ?

What do these levels mean for a bright but very anxious about school 6 yo in year two.

According to the paperwork....

Stage 20 reading (should be between 21 to 28)

Spelling Blue (should be yellow or white)

Phonetics phrase 3 (should be between 4 to 6)

As a parent this looks like my child is failing across the board.....

Teacher said the change of curriculum, means everyone in the class is the same and everyone will be caught up by Christmas.

....so is this a cause for concern or not ?

Do you have any idea which sounds he is doing?
Phase 3 letters and sounds are the following:
Set 6: j, v, w, x

Set 7: y, z, zz, qu

Consonant digraphs: ch, sh, th, ng

Vowel digraphs: ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er

Phase 1 doesn't cover any sounds and runs alongside other phases.

Phase 2 is meant to last 6weeks of reception
Phase 3 is meant to last 12weeks
Phase 4 contains no new sounds and will consolidate the 42 sounds taught in phases 2&3 and begin reading words that have two consonants at the beginning or end and last roughly 4weeks

Phase 5 covers some alternative spellings for the sounds already introduced in phases 2 & 3 is taught in Y1

Phase 6 covers suffixes and prefixes and is taught in Y2

I would also be very concerned about any child in my Y1 class working on phase 3 at this point in the year

All I know at the moment...is when I asked the teacher about moving up she said he had to learn about "bear" and how the "ea" or "ear" was different in other words.

My DH tested him on the phase 3 with list and he struggled with 50% of them. :(

How cam he still be in phase 3, 18 months later.

Apparently from spelling tests, reading and reading eggs what else can we do at home to help him ?

MrZ, What is the best way to teach DS phase 3 phonics at home ? Any websites or books we could use. Also how can we assess what he currently knows of phrase 3 ?

www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/schoolsnet/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=34387&p=0 is a comprehensive assessment for phase 1, 2 and 3 and will give a full picture of where your child is. I would be aiming for 80%+ secure application before moving on.

Um OP do you think testing your child at home is the best way to go? If he's anxious already then you (being very anxious and involved yourselves very understandably) are likely only to make this worse.

I don't think getting advice from people on the internet is the way to go with this. You've just had parents evening where you told he was progressing fine but the evidence you've had suggests otherwise. SO what you need to do is go back in for that same conversation again and ask about the progress he's made in all three years of school so far. You need to see what that is. It sounds like he may not have progressed very much at all at which point you need to challenge the school - possibly including the senior management team - to say what their action plan is.

My personal experience is of a bright child who did progress well but OFSTED assessed the whole of KS1 as not making enough progress and there were considerable shake ups as a result. What did the last OFSTED report say about progress in KS1 and when was it?

Obviously you're concerned but please don't burden ds with it. Read with him for fun this weekend and keep your worries about his progress very much away from him.

The school will do nothing as he is 'fine' and 'doing well'.

The marks suggest a different picture...where else can I go to get an accurate picture of DS education.

The school blame me for his anxiety and sent their behaviourist to our home 'to sort out your problems'

There are no problems at home, the behaviourist said we were good parents with a good understanding of Triple P principles and we needed no support.

The school have told us it is 'fine' to be on phase 3 on year 2. At this rate his 4yo sister who is working quickly through phase 2 will be joining him for phonic lessons Sad That can't be right :(

I think your issue is very much with the school then. Are they confident in their marks? Did they give you any idea where he was in relation to his peers?

No idea how accurate scores are, or how far through phase 3 DS is iyswim.

I don't know what the rest of his class are up to but the two children (who's mothers I know) in the year below (year 1) are already ahead in phase 4.

A found a spring report from year 1 last year...can't find the summer one

But the levels are all different. The only one I can compare is the spelling rainbow words...he is the same level now as he was in March..Blue.

Doesn't sound right at all, tbf I have never paid too much attention to reading levels and colour schemes. Partly ad ny elder two were home educatedat that age and we never did them. But I was able to judge the progress the younger madthings were making and could see they were learning.

Ds4 is in yr 2, he has finished the phonics scheme and is almost a free reader. And is now doing something called literacy and something.., he is ahead of where he needs to be for the end of year two apparently. Basically he can read and reads well. Have to say all of mine have Bern slow to start reading but once they have got it it has just clicked.

You need to speak to the school.

But in the meantime read to him lots and with him, a variety of fiction and non fiction etc. Even stuff like maps and road signs and packaging in shops, sound stuff out for him, just make reading part of everyday life.

Have you had his eyesight tested? Never hurts to rule stuff out like that.

He had his eyes tested at school but I will make another appointment to check his eyesight.

Think I will make an appointment to see the deputy head. No point going to see the teacher as she will repeat that he is fine. Sigh, I am trying to get away from involving the school. If we get no joy, DH will see Headmaster.
