Reading eggs and maths seeds

Hi I'm interested in getting the reading eggs program on the Internet but I'm also interested in maths seeds. What do other mums think of both program's and I just wanted to know what sorts of discounts did you get on both program's. my son is 5. Anyway thanks

I'm intrigued (as a teacher) - what on earth are reading eggs and maths seeds. I've never heard of either.

It's on the Internet it's a reading program to help children read and maths seeds is new maths program done by same company. They have a free trail on both program's check it out.

Reading Eggs is an American online programme as such it doesn't follow the methods used in UK schools

the sounds in English don't change jellybean and it isn't style it's method very different things.

I'm very pro phonics but my daughter has found reading eggs fantastic and we did maths eggs too.

It's actually australian made but redubbed mainky with uk friendly accents. It seems mainly phonics based as most of it is building up learning of sounds and then getting them to blend small words using the sounds they have already leant.

I think they added "I" as a word early on and a couple of non decodable words but in practice it was a lot of repetition of clicking on the "mmmm". This is mmmmm. And then looking for the m sound in a word.

it also asks for how many sounds in a word - ie chip is 3 - ch i p. It seems to fit really well with the phonics she's learning.

they probably introduce the letter names earlier Nx do introduce some non phonetic words but then her read write inc has said and like too.

they are introduced as hopping on islands anx is word recognition but I wouldn't discount using it just because of a small amount if exercises in it.

It certainly helped get my daughter excited about reading and keen to progress. We've only bought phonics readers for practice at home and it hasn't seemed to be a problem.she's progressing well with rwi at school.

I subscribed to Reading Eggs for my son when he was 5, he was struggling a bit with reading (August baby, failed the phonics test at the end of year 1).

The phonics sounded right to me and it was in an English accent, I think it's just the order of teaching sounds that is different? Anyway, he enjoyed playing the games, it made a change from reading with him and he was keen to do more, as you progress through levels and can earn certificates.

He certainly made progress with his reading while he was using it, although whether that was due to the Reading Eggs or the book reading I was also doing with him who knows.

It wasn't expensive though, we got 6 months subscription on a special offer, and he enjoyed using it so I'd recommend it. Didn't renew it as he was well away with his reading by then.

We did a free trial of the maths one but he was already above the level that it gets to so didn't sign up.

We've had free trials on both. TBH that's been enough for DS. We do a free trial, DS whizzes through a load of it and enjoys it but then gets bored of them before the free trial is over. Then we do another free trial next time they send us a code.

Agree with mrz the reading eggs phonics is a bit different from school phonics - they seem to do a lot with combinations of letters as well as single letters/sounds. So e.g. they will 'do' the sound "am" and do lots of words ending in "am", whereas at school they just do "a" and "m" and let them get on with combinations themselves. And that seems to make the programme a bit slow because they do all the two-letter/sound combos separately. And we don't like that they insist r-i-n-g is four sounds when ng is really more like one sound and is taught as one sound at school.

I do think doing lots of different word games, both electronic and physical, is probably better for DS's reading than sticking with one way of looking at things anyway.

If he kept interested in it I would be happy to subscribe though, it's entertaining him and is definitely helping his reading/maths.

There's some reading eggs apps too which people have said are quite good, if you like it but not enough to subscribe that might be a cheaper way to do it.

Yup the maths one is only early maths wheras the reading one goes up a lot higher.

I agree they spend a long time sounding out words that end in "am' or "at" and looking at rhyming words but there's so many levels I think it's good to recognise that things sound familiar or rhyme. They're still decoding phonetically I think.

I wouldn't use it and I wouldn't advice the parents of my pupils to use it although many MN mums swear by it

I got it for my dd. She is being educucated through a different language and I was keen for her to get up to speed with English too. She loves it. Often asks to do another lesson. I have found it really good.
