World Bookday Costume angst

It will be upon us before we know it - tell me about your winning costumes so that I can shamelessly copy start considering what to suggest to my DS and is within the realms of my very limited cobble-up-ability.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid? You probably don't have to go this far but you could just do the white t-shirt, black shorts, black shoes and black backpack.

How old is DS?

Reception DS was the hungry caterpillar - green top, green leggings, little red legs sewn on and a hat with pipe cleaner antennae

In year 1 he went as Kipper - jeans and a t-shirt and a cuddly toy dog which looked like Floppy. Mum sent her youngest 2 (who were yr 1 and 2 at the school) in as Biff and Chip

year 2 he was Peter Pan - green shirt and belt, cut zig-zaggy at the bottom, brown trousers and wellies

Year 3 was wheres wally - red stripy top and a red stripy hat

Year 4 was Harry Potter, I cheated and bought a costume.

No idea what he'l be this year and have to try to work out what to do for reception DD, who will no doubt pick something awkward.

Pinocchio- white shirt, home-made felt hat with paper cutout of Jiminy cricket stuck to it , 3/4 length red trousers with braces

DD dressed as Cleopatra with a sheet pinned round her and a headdress and a gold "collar" made from cardboard.

Headdress - www.thecrafttrain.com/1/post/2012/11/paper-princess-tiaras.html - the shape of the one on the left but not with cut-out parts, a couple of cardboard snakes stuck/stapled on and all sprayed gold.

Also cut a large crescent shape cut out of cardboard (big enough to go round from one shoulder to another and sprayed gold). Put a string to go round her back to hold it on

We had moved house the day before and by an absolute miracle I unearthed gold spray paint for the "jewellery". I unpacked a couple of boxes and used the cardboard. We made the costume in approx 30 minutes the night before she needed to wear it.

Yes, I know that Cleo may not be everyone's idea of a suitable lit character for a child but it was inspired by the pile of sheets in a box and was all I could think of at the time.

Pirate - trousers tucked into wellies, an old shirt (anyone's or from a charity shop) with rips in it. Eye patch made from cardboard and tied on with string. Take 2 long, narrow rectangular bits of card or stiff paper that together will fit round the head, each with a half-circle fixed to it. Glue or staple at the sides for the hat. And don't panic!!

Easiest I ever did was Harry and his bucket full of dinosaurs - own clothes, plastic sand bucket containing plastic dinosaurs.
For an older boy, Charlie Bucket from Charlie and the chocolate factory, old clothes slightly too small and a home made golden ticket.

What is this? No! I already have a complex about checking the bookbag for notes and demands for money, lest I get accosted in the playground and publicly humiliated. More homework for me?! Do they do this in reception?

I did Charlie and the chocolate factory a few years ago - did the new version one so jeans and a red hoody plus a ticket - going to be smug here and already got daughters sorted - the female where wally - I cant stand the book day madness in February/march so got it sorted now

I always struggled with ds all through primary, he hated dressing up. In year 6, I gave up, dressed him in his own clothes and gave him a bit of greenery from the garden. Jack and the beanstalk, as his name is Jack, they couldn't argue

It's for the children not you!

Ask your kid what book they like, cobble something together and job done.

DD2 last year went as a Chalet School girl. She had brown gym tunic, cream blouse, orange tie, brown blazer and brown berret. Very easy to make. I'm hoping I can adapt it to something else. I don't think anyone else (even her teacher) had heard of the books though.

I think Mallory Towers was also a brown uniform...

Last year DS was Percy Jackson (book version not film version - matters for costume), orange T -shirt (was DD1's, but never worn) with Camp Half Blood written on it in marker pen, cord with 4 beads on (made with air drying clay from the craft box) and jeans.

DD1 was Cat in the Hat (black tracksuit with tail sewn onto top, stripy hat and face paint) and DD2 was a cow - don't ask, tried get her to be Alice in Wonderland but she wasn't playing ball, she wanted to wear the Cow costume I made for World Book day when DD1 was in preschool and had to be a character from the Gingerbread Man story.

We don't have prizes at school for which I am grateful as some of the Mum's have great ideas, the Mum how produced a Dogs don't do Ballet costume, I am still in awe of your creativity.

NumTumDeDum It's not til 6th March, the kids dress up as a book character and there's usually book tokens given out in school, maybe a special assembly or an author coming in, reading and writing stories, that kind of thing, it depends on the school what exactly they do but yes most reception children do it.

Ds went as Augustus gloop last year, golden ticket from eBay and shirt that was a bit small; plus a label saying my name is Augustus!

Julian or Dick of the Famous Five - shorts, shirt, tank top or just normal clothes plus binoculars

Charlie Bucket - normal clothes plus golden ticket

Ron Weasley - normal clothes plus broomstick

Alex Rider - normal clothes

Can you tell I had a son who HATED dressing up

So I saw a notice for WBD at my DD's nursey yesterday. I'm quite excited at the prospect of her dressing up though not sure as what yet- she's only 3! Have seen some suggestions online for face paints which she loves- hmm- would it work her face being painted all day at nursery?

DD went as Fern from Charlotte's Web one year which was very easy - dungarees, a checked shirt, gum boots and she carried a toy pig.

If you can dredge up anything that looks a bit Victorian (party dress, straw hat, boots) a girl can go as Mary from The Secret Garden.

My best costume for dd was pippi longstocking. She wore a patchwork dress from a charity shop, knee length socks with boots and we used pipe cleaners to get the hair to curl upwards! She looked brill!

DD was an owl from Owl Babies. Brown leggings and a brown long sleeved top with feather shaped pieces of various brown fabric stuck on. Took me fucking ages
