World Bookday Costume angst

It will be upon us before we know it - tell me about your winning costumes so that I can shamelessly copy start considering what to suggest to my DS and is within the realms of my very limited cobble-up-ability.

Grandma has recently made a knight costume for ds , white tabard with chain mail sleeves and a Red Cross on the chest.

I just need to have a book for him to take in now. Not keen on mike the knight ( too babyish) any suggestions ?

Sir Gadabout worse knight in the world. He does have a big nose - so if you can get a joke witches nose it finishes off the costume nicely!

We have to do characters from a traditional fairy tale this year. To stop everyone turning up as Buzz Lightyear and Wolverine, I suspect.

lizardqueenie, yup that's all i did when DS was the hungry caterpillar. I've been trying to convince DD that's what she wants to be but no, she wants to be little red riding hood.

I work in school as a TA what shouldn't go as??????

NannyPeach I really want my dd to go as Pippi Longstocking and she would have done a year or two ago, but her school don't always do World Book Day dressing up so I have missed the chance! (She is tall and skinny with long red hair so would be perfect!). They are dressing up this year, and she is in full Harry Potter emersion mode so is going as Ginny Weasley.

Approach from the other angle! What costumes/dress-ups have you already got, or with a bit of adaptation could you produce? Now think of a character for the costume! eg if you have some leggings and a bobble hat... stick some cut out pointy ears on a hairband and hey presto you have an elf from the Elves and Shoemaker (or a Harry Potter house elf/goblin). Any animal costumes can easily be turned into book characters, too.

DD1 wants to go as Darrel from Malory Towers, so brown skirt, cardigan, homemade Malory Towers logo & lacrosse stick.

DD2 wants to go as Ada Goth from Goth Girl & a ghost of a mouse. So I'm attempting to dye a dress & lace gloves purple and she'll carry a stuffed toy white rat from IKEA! Close enough!!

Big hit that I did for DS1 was Stig (as in Stig of the Dump, not racing driver!) a bit of cheap fake fur fabric, twigs and leaves tangled in hair. (DS has rather wild curly hair anyway) mud on the face.

We didn't have to dress up last year, but so far we have had:

DS reception dinosaurs love underpants (dinosaur costume with a pair of boxers over, hole cut for tail)

Yr3 Horrid Henry -jeans, turquoise long sleeved t-shirt with yellow stripes made from a charity shop t-shirt.

DD -cat in the hat-I had made DS a top hat for a fancy dress party and added red/white stripes, black leggings and a cardigan plus tail made from tights.

What about Worst witch or meg and mog or Winnie the witch using a Halloween costume.

I forgot, this year DS has to be an Alice in wonderland character, he has chosen Mad March Hare (trousers, shirt, waistcoat, bunny ears and pompon tail)

DD has to be from traditional tales and will be red riding hood (once I have cobbled a cloak from an old red skirt of mine)

Dd was gangsta granny last year
I bought a wig and sprayed white paint on it.
Bought fake glasses and made a sack and put fake jewellery in it.

Ok our children's school has a Shakespeare theme for world book day - wtf.
So my 9 year old boy could wear his onesie with skulls on (yorick) and 6 year old daughter could be Tatiana queen of the fairies I guess but can anyone come up with any other ideas in case these get the cold shoulder?

For Shakespeare, you could try Hamlet (dress him in black trousers that are a bit too short, long black top with a belt & toy sword, improvise for a collar/ruff). Or Henry V (similar but with more armour, less black and a shield & crown). Or Bottom from Midsummer Night's Dream if he wants to dress up as a donkey!! Your DD could be Juliet (long floaty white dress & ribbons in hair) or Miranda from the Tempest, or Puck if she doesn't want to be too girly.

Found out yesterday staff are expected to dress up as well. Alex from Clockwork Orange? Du Maurier's rebecca? Jeanette Winterson as herself? The Young staff are getting very excited, but I am just going to hide for the day (non-teaching job). Kids tell me staff will be fined 5 if we don't dress up. Bollocks to that

My best ever (and it is not that brilliant because I am truly crap at costumes) was sending ds2 in as Christopher Robin. Shorts, short sleeved shirt, wellies and big blue umbrella (so he could walk round saying 'Tut tut, looks like rain', and all the Winnie the Pooh cuddlies we had to hand.

Does anyone know where I can buy (because I'm hopeless at making costumes) a Max from Where The Wild Things Are costume? I've searched online but no luck so far. At least not unless I'm prepared to pay at least £35 and have it shipped from the US.
Dd really wants to go as him this year.

My dd school doing a "come dressed as your own superhero" theme where have to make up a new superhero ,apparently this is because J K Rowling has said she wants to write a book about a new superhero... Where to start, wish it was just favourite character so can do easy Matilda.

Only ds3 dressing up this year. We are doing a repeat of ds2's previous smash hit, The Boy from Lost and Found: stripy tshirt, beanie hat of dh's, suitcase fashioned from an inside out cereal box and ds1's giant stuffed toy penguin.

Last year ds3 went as Elmer which was cute but very labour intensive - I hand painted an old tshirt of dh's and cardboard ears and trunk. It took forever - not making that mistake again.
