End-of-year gift for teachers - what and how much to spend?

Ok - 'fess up everyone - what are you planning/have bought and how much to spend on the end-of-year pressie for ds/dd's primary school teacher?

Didn't buy one last year - are you supposed to?

DD has 2 teachers (Year 1) and DS has about 4 (Nursery) so I might buy them some choccies if I do.

ooh!.dd started nursery in april..should i be buying pressies for her teachers???

Dd has three I need to buy for - teacher and classroom assistant, plus music teacher - I usually buy choccies or toiletries and spend around £5 each, but wonder if that's too much/too little

Dd2 playschool- £5 each posh handmade paper notebook (she has been there for 2.3 years!)
Dd2 -nursery-chocolate or cake to share (don't know how many staff and shes not been there very long)

Dd1- Teacher and TA £4-5 nice chocolates (she said they like chocs)they have been fantastic this year when she has been ill.

i teach infants

most gifts i got this year cost about a fiver
wine
chocs
pocket size perfume from next
other 'next' accessories
fancy stationery
nice toiletries - boots / next
keyring from accessorise (my favourite!!!)

all lovely and appreciated.

i appreciated the wee notes from parents most of all

my dp is a teacher and the best year was when some of the mother clubbed together and gave him some vouchers and they asked what shop he wanted them from.

So I'm getting vouchers for my sons preschool staff

One of the things not to get is mugs. He gets about 10 every Xmas.

I don't usually get anything for DD1's highschool teachers I'm afraid - there are too many of them.

agree with alex8

i used to work in a school were all the parents of each class clubbed together and got vouchers.

just £4 from each parent resulted in £100 of john lewis vouchers for me, or beauty / meal /next vouchers for other teachers.

I made some homemade white choc fudge - cut it into fingers and wrapped. Bought nice mug/ceramic bowl - put it in there and wrapped with cellophane.

I did that for dd1's teachers and therapists and they loved it. Easy recipe. Helped that our end of year is christmas too.

recipe

H I am making white choc and cranberry fudge tc.

3 375g pkts of white choc melts
2 tins - 395g sweetened condensed milk
3/4 cup icing sugar - have to check this
1 cup chopped cranberries
(I also put in sultanas and would do some sort of nut if I knew the person did not have a nut allergy)

  1. In a double boiler ( I just use saucepan inside another that has boiling water in it ) over a low heat - melt and mix the sweetened condensed milk and the white choc melts

  2. when melted and thick, remove from the heat, add the icing sugar and the friut/nuts.

  3. pour into a baking paper lined slice tray.

  4. Chill in the fridge until set ( I leav emine over night)

  5. CUt into fingers/squares. Arrange in a bowl/mug/dish etc. I then cover it with cellophane. I ahve also wrapped the fingers in cellophane individually.

other thing I make rocky road which english dh had never had until he moved to Aus....

recipe

choc melts - 2 pkts - white/dark/milk - whatever you like
2pkts marshmallows
jellies or gummy sweets
coconut
nuts ( but not if they are for presents)

Melt the choc
add the sweets
put into a slice tin and refrigerate until sets

cut into squares

Just got the bowl/mug at discount shop - was fine. Every person loved what they got - very cheap and one batch of each goes a long way.

for ds's preschool teachers I was thinking of getting them wine,do you think I should get red or white,can't decide.I prefer red but not sure if white is more popular?

My DH (teaches reception) is hoping he doesn't get chocs or sweets as he got so many at Christmas! He wants home-made cards/food (his class is 95% Bengali)

Fab receipe Eidsvold - sod the teachers, I'm making it for myself DS1's class tutor and DS2's teacher will get wine btw. DD is leaving her fantastic nursery so they'll get champagne, chocs and the sight of me crying my eyes out saying goodbye!

Thanks for all the ideas - if there's time we'll try the recipes, they sound yummy - don't know if they'd make it as far as the teachers though.

i have spend 15 on each of my two primaary ones... keep them sweet i have a lot more children coming through!

what do people think to a batch of Suzy Wong's famous chocolate brownies as a home-made gift and then chipping into a class pot for vouchers?
