3+ 4+ 5+ 7+ support thread 2014

I started the below thread last year and have had so many people find it useful I thought it might be worth doing it again.

I have had a number of messages asking if I have any spaces in my classes. I'm really sorry but I have been at full capacity for some time now.

However, I do appreciate that this is a very stressful time of year for parents who have children sitting these private school assessments in January 2013. So, I'm hoping that by setting up this support group thread I can help by answering some questions you have about these assessments.

Hopefully this thread will also contain some useful insight from the experiences of parents who have already been through the process.

Definitely no grilling at St Helens today. Deputy Head did most of the talking about how the school works, leadership team etc. Good luck all!

MiaJasmine · 14/01/2014 22:21

Mumteacher in case you are still on, slightly off topic but as well as a 4+ dd I have an 11+ dd who is taking Habs girls tomorrow. Do you have any tips on what to expect? I know it's a 1 hr maths, English and VR but no past papers to go on. Would appreciate your views - thanks in advance x

GoodnessKnows · 14/01/2014 22:30

Mia, the 11+ assessment will have a piece of creative writing (usually a story, choices given), a comprehension and a maths paper.

GoodnessKnows · 14/01/2014 22:35

On addition to the VR. Some rather more NVR questions will also be incorporated. Have a look at the Habs Boys' School specimen papers. www.habsboys.org.uk/info/examinations/11plus/11plus.php
Although the comprehension is usually based on more boy-friendly topics (Christmas Carol, etc.), the Girls' school exam is very similar. Last two pages of the maths paper are always harder than those preceding.

MiaJasmine · 14/01/2014 22:36

Thanks GoodnessKnows - appreciate you coming back to me. I'll be SO glad once this is all over - 11+ and 4+ at the same time has been tough!

gemsept · 14/01/2014 22:40

Can anyone advise what might be asked at 2nd stage 4+ channing assessment.

Mondaybaby · 14/01/2014 23:06

Another requesting any information about the second round at Channing (4+). Is it different to the first round which my daughter appeared to enjoy quite a lot!

coldatchristmas · 14/01/2014 23:36

Sorry to keep asking but has anyone else heard from Habs 4+? We had last Friday and still nothing..

MiaJasmine · 15/01/2014 04:16

Coldstchristmas, we did Habs 4+ last Wednesday and still not heard anything...

GoodnessKnows · 15/01/2014 06:58

Mia, 'in' not 'on'.
Must be so stressful. The preparation, lead up and wait for one assessment alone is hard enough! Fingers crossed for you on both counts!

PinkAngels2 · 15/01/2014 07:24

Codatchristmas - don't worry Habs normally call some back straight away, and stagger some through to the end of Jan.
Rejections have also started to come out. Hope it helps and good luck.

As always anything not correct mumteacher will correct
X

mumteacher · 15/01/2014 08:39

Habs do like to stagger the call back for round2. I think the best approach to take is you haven't had an email saying no, so no news is good news ;)
If it helps only one of my students have heard back and I'm sure some of the others will hear its just when! The wait is always the hardest part.

11+ story, comp, maths, mental maths, vr and nvr. Some schools will inc IQ testing incorporated within nvr. I'm really sorry but my knowledge of 11+ re individual schools scrappy at best x good luck with 11+ x

coldatchristmas, I am still waiting for Habs 4+ too. Have not heard back at all. We had our assessment on Saturday.

missimperial · 15/01/2014 11:58

We're still waiting Habs as well. I'd be interested in hearing about people's back ups if the whole NLCS/Habs /Channing scenario doesn't work out?

ellie74 · 15/01/2014 12:04

Hello,

Back up plan for now is Grimsdell (Mill Hill) - we have an offer there already.
What is yours?

coldatchristmas · 15/01/2014 12:11

Ours is Radlett Prep x

Faithmum02 · 15/01/2014 12:12

We have a place at edge grove ... I guess that will be the back up.

ellie74 · 15/01/2014 12:25

Does anybody know whether Channing will do a double intake this year?

sdp123 · 15/01/2014 12:52

sorry to keep asking anyone have any opinions on Aldenham Prep?

Faithmum02 · 15/01/2014 12:55

Any opinions on edge grove please?

Ja123 · 15/01/2014 13:00

Just finished reading mumteachers thread from 2013...

Oh my goodness.

So 70% of NLCS 7+ go to your tutees?

What are you doing on these forums then? Having a laugh.

coldatchristmas · 15/01/2014 13:01

Edgegrove more gentle start with focus in sport etc and not as academic as some other schools. I have friends kids who are very happy there.

Ja123 · 15/01/2014 13:08

And what are mumteachers credentials?

All the sheep following.... Come on!

I mean she gives no real advice, says a few random things, argues with other posters, goes on the offensive/ defensive/ then offensive again.

So arrogant to start threads and then play on the neediness of others all the while knowing its a loser's game as apparently only most of her own tutees get in to the 'good' schools.

MJizz · 15/01/2014 13:09

Purely speculating here but this staggered approach by Habs, do you think they call back the best performers first and, depending on how the first few perform on the second round, carry on going down the list over the course of the next two weeks until all the spots have been filled? Fyi, we went on Thursday and no news from Habs as yet.
