What does upheld mean???

We've just had a one line email about our appeal that took place on Tuesday and it says "I write to inform you that this appeal was upheld" I'm being really dim but does that mean we were successful or the council??

"Upheld means that a decision was confirmed or supported. (verb)"

I'm pretty sure that means the original decision was upheld, ie. you weren't successful - sorry.

My understanding is that you were unsuccessful (I'm a law graduate). If you had won the appeal, it would have been granted. That's what I was taught anyway...

Can't believe it - we were convinced that we were going to be unsuccesful. My daughter is going to be delighted to be going back to her old school. Thank-you prh47bridge for the information you gave back to me when we were preparing our appeal paperwork it was really good to have my mind focussed on what we needed to do!

If the appeal was upheld then you won.

If the council's decision was uphelp, then they won.

However, I would ring the admissions department asap to double check as you won't be happy with the differing opinions here!

Oh no, now I'm all confused again and they've posted our paperwork to us rather than emailed it to us (we're overseas heading back to the UK and the paperwork takes about 3/4 weeks at moment to get here!).

It definitely means that you won your appeal for our preferred school. Whilst that is the correct terminology to use, it does not say much for the authority that they are sending out one line emails that are open to confusion. You should get a formal letter with reasons why your appeal was upheld, which will also give you information about contacting the school etc.
What we would normally say to appellants who are successful is do not contact the school until after you have received the official letter, because the school finds out at the same time as you what the decision of the panel was.

Thank-you all. We've just confirmed with the council that our appeal was upheld. Take your point admission about contacting the school although they do know we were appealing (the girls went there previously and we are now returning).

I was similarly confused when we heard about the results of our appeal - I had no idea whether that meant we were successful or not! I had to skip to the end of the letter when it said "Therefore get in touch with X school to accept your new place" - only then I went PHEW! I'm not quite sure why they can't be clearer.

It means that your appeal not the initial decision was upheld.

I do wish people who are not experienced in admissions appeals would stop handing out misleading advice.

Congratulations, though I am confused about how you are making applications for a school place and winning appeals when you are apparently not in the country!

If you have been abroad for a while and returning you need to seek education for your DC before you arrive back in the country to avoid educational delay for them, if you are allocated school places at a school you don't want you could appeal this decision before arriving back. I'm not saying this is what happened but it is an example of what could happen.

You don't need to be experienced in admission appeals to know what 'appeal upheld' means. I'm not a lawyer, nor have I ever appealed an admissions decision but I am able to tell the op what it means Hmm

Leaving, my understanding was that you could not apply until a) you had a UK address, which is fine if OP had kept a UK property going, and more importantly b) if the child was not currently resident in the UK.

but my bad, I will get back to developing my mystical powers.....
