Summer Reading Challenge

For those who haven't heard of this

www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/

One way of keeping reading going over the summer holidays - more fun than school reading books and usually results in motivational chart of some sort possibly with progress stickers along the way and a small reward at the end.

Will start when schools break up in July or thereabouts.

My kids do this every year. They frequent the library a lot anyway, but they like the freebies, the puzzles and other sheets that they can get from the library and the certificate and medal at the end too.

MuddlingMackem · 20/06/2012 21:55

My two do this every year too. They like the stickers, the medals and the certificates. And last year they got to go see a magic show for the presentation of the certificates.

And DD is looking forward to this being the first year she'll be able to read her books herself rather than having to have them read to her. Grin

simpson · 20/06/2012 21:59

It is a brilliant scheme and DS has done it for the past two years and is already looking forward to this summer.

DD (4) is pleased as its the first time she is able to do it!!!

Cokeaholic · 20/06/2012 22:02

Looks like they get a medal as the reward this year and what child isn't pleased to be awarded a certificate !

Hopefully I'm not just preaching to the converted and the thread pulls in some MN'ers who hadn't heard of it too.

We love reading in this house.

Thanks, think I'll sign DS up, he loves stuff like this. We are probably the converted but thanks anyway!

hocuspocusherewego · 21/06/2012 13:33

thanks for the link my DCs have been asking what it is this year. Unfortunately eldest DD is too old this year but has said she will help youngest DD with hers, and my boys are talking about going to the library 6 times in one day to try and win the finished first prize Hmm

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 21/06/2012 14:37

we erre the only family who took a medal into school from the reading challenge last year. I am sure more parents must have done it though.

Tikkabillajive · 21/06/2012 14:40

We went to the library in the first week of the summer holidays last year and they had already run out of packs Sad. This year is the first year that reading has really 'clicked' for dd so I am really hoping to get hold of a pack for her, she will love it!

Cokeaholic · 08/07/2012 20:12

bumping thread as the summer hols are only a couple of weeks away now.

Thanks cokeaholic I'd forgotten about this, another FREE activity I can add to my Summer Hols list of things to do.

Sittinginthesun · 08/07/2012 21:10

We signed up yesterday. Grin

RueDeWakening · 08/07/2012 21:54

DD signed up yesterday and has read her first book already - and mean old me made her write a (2 sentence) book review before I let her write it on the bookmark thingy :o Have also instigated a new rule of having to read books by 6 different authors to avoid reading those bloody rainbow magic books for ever.

5 more to go...

PommePomme · 08/07/2012 22:01

Is it just me or is the font on the site very hard to read?

I was looking at it for DC1 who is just starting to get to grips with reading but the website has put me off a bit.

bumpybecky · 08/07/2012 22:14

different authors = genius! bloody rainbow magic books

whimsy · 10/07/2012 18:02

Thanks, signed up today although it doesn't start until the 21st July here.

MigratingCoconuts · 10/07/2012 18:08

loved this last year! Can't wait to sign my two up again...

shattereddreams · 10/07/2012 18:35

Bexley London are not doing it so I sent a stern email to head of library services. No response!
So annoying.

Seona1973 · 10/07/2012 18:53

dd and ds already have their Bronze stickers as our holidays have started already (Scotland). They seem to have less to fill in this year which is just as well as we signed up late last year and never managed to complete it in time.

3duracellbunnies · 10/07/2012 19:22

Ours starts on friday, different authors a good idea, also for dd2 (reception) I might get one for her and one for me to read, as they are bit lacking in easy readers.

Cokeaholic · 22/07/2012 20:49

We've finally got our packs, having registered in advance because for some reason the library started it on the Monday of the last week at school. Kids at school and parents working for 5 consecutive days from the start date ! I'm thinking they haven't quite thought it through and aligned access/registration with the group of individuals it is targeted at.

Dc started in advance however and have already read one book each, hoping to have done 2 by the end of this week when we revisit the library.

Looking forward to their reaction to the smelly sticker(s) hinted at by the librarian.

3duracellbunnies · 22/07/2012 21:36

We did our first two, and swopped them yesterday, ploughing on through the next lot. Dd1 has found David Walliams more entertaining than Rainbow fairies, ideas for next one welcome, (other than Roald Dahl which is the reason we are reading the DW). Dd2 valiently reading through hers too, though annoying that their 'easy reader' books have no indication of what level they are on, so a bit hit and miss. Even ds (who is nearly 3) has been allowed one, he takes his rating very seriously, must have a dinosaur to get a 3!

Cokeaholic · 29/07/2012 11:22

Has anyone else been given all 3 sets of stickers in one go ?

We went in on Saturday morning and librarian gave me the dc bronze, silver and gold. I passed her back the silver and gold but she said "it's weird, but I'm supposed to give them all out at the same time" . I've confiscated the silver and gold until they have been earned ! .

OP posts:
Tgger · 29/07/2012 21:37

No, we got bronze, then silver and about to get gold. DS is most excited about the gold medal that is apparently given out at the end of the holiday!

BlisdergamesbeginPack · 30/07/2012 03:26

This is the DCs fourth time doing it. We still have all the old medals like the Dragon Quest and Space whatever etc.

Cokeaholic, looks like they're being lazy. My cousin was saying in her area they don't even bother checking that six books have been read or talking to the children about the books! They just go oh here are your stickers and then sign them up as having completed the challenge Hmm.

Taffletics · 30/07/2012 19:10

3duracellbunnies - you could try Mr Gum. Its very strange and very funny.
