For those who haven't heard of this

www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/

One way of keeping reading going over the summer holidays - more fun than school reading books and usually results in motivational chart of some sort possibly with progress stickers along the way and a small reward at the end.

Will start when schools break up in July or thereabouts.

Well, what did everyone's dc get for a completion of the challenge "prize" ?

We got ......... a pencil and a bookmark. There will be a certificate too next week.

We were told the completion incentive varies around the country so I thought we could all compare.

We got that last year and expect it will be the same this year but we wont find out until tomorrow.

simpson · 05/09/2012 14:09

Did you not get the medal too??

DC got a medal and certificate each and the librarian was fab at did a little award ceremony for them.

Think they got another load of the cards but don't remember a pencil or a bookmark.

Perhaps they don't have enough volunteers. I have done it and I certainly chatted to them all about the books - if it was busy however you are conscious of the queue and have to speed it up a bit. Covering all the library opening hours for the whole holiday is tricky - as a volunteer I only managed 3 sessions and I know they struggled at times because they phoned to try and get me to fill in.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 05/09/2012 16:49

ours got keyrings and are supposed to get a certificate and medal sometime in october (i think)

exoticfruits · 05/09/2012 16:50

The certicates go to the school - I think it is incentive for others to do it next summer.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 05/09/2012 16:56

our reading challenge wasnt done through the school though, we did it direct with the library

exoticfruits · 05/09/2012 17:25

This was direct with the library.

exoticfruits · 05/09/2012 17:26

The librarian went into schools to promote it. If they are home educated they get the certificate as soon as they finish. The idea is that it is more special if it is handed out with an audience.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 05/09/2012 18:15

I didnt find out through the school either so I dont know if it was promoted there or not. I found out about it when we went to the library. It may work differently in Scotland though.

lovebeingamother · 05/09/2012 18:31

Hi, my DD got a Story Lab keyring along with her gold sticker for completing all the six books. Our library is also organizing an award ceremony towards the middle of the month, where the children will be awarded with medals and certificates. We had to sign a declaration that we can attend it.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 05/09/2012 18:34

are you in scotland too lovebeingamother?

exoticfruits · 05/09/2012 19:02

We write down where they heard about it, some are through school, some are direct at the library and some are from family or friends. They all got a gold medal in the library if they finished. There is a mad dash this week to finish before the deadline of Saturday!

simpson · 05/09/2012 20:23

Our certificates did not go to the school.

The librarian did talk to the kids about what books they read though.

We did get a key ring at some point too.

DS knew this yr that the medals are on a ribbon because he was shown them at school but no bumf on it for the parents though...

UniS · 05/09/2012 20:28

DS's haul from the summer reading challenge was a badge, some stickers, a wristband ,a medal and certificate. He was happy.

Last year there was a Presentation party , not this year. This year once kids had completed they were asked to colour in a "mini me" paper person that was then taked onto a shelf front to show how many kids in our area had completed.

exoticfruits · 05/09/2012 20:35

I expect all areas run it differently. Ours certainly couldn't operate without an army of volunteers because the librarians don't have time - it was quite nice that we were all ages, but unfortunately nearly all female.

exoticfruits · 05/09/2012 20:36

We had over 850 children, so a big scheme if multiplied all over the country.

Myliferocks · 05/09/2012 20:39

My 12 thought she was to old this year as she turned 12 in August. The librarian said she could still do it and instead of a medal have a free hire of a music cd.

Wandastartup · 06/09/2012 23:29

Ours was the same as Unis but in addition could choose either a free swim or hire of a DVD if completed.

IWantAnotherBaby · 07/09/2012 10:44

My 2 children (DD 4, DS 9) did it again this year, and DD has loved showing off her certificate and medal at school (started reception this week). DS would secretly love to show his off, too, but is scared other children will laugh at him (also just moved schools) so hasn't. Its a lovely idea, and keeps them reading throughout the long holidays (in fact FAR more than the six books they record). When they got the silver level, they also had wrist bands; a big hit!
