Homework Rant

As a teacher I'm taking a risk ranting about parents on this site but I thought you might like to see the other side! Here goes. Some comments about my homework ALL from parents evening last week:
Homework is too hard.
Homework is too easy.
There is too much homework.
There is not enough homework.
I'm too strict about deadlines.
I'm not strict enough about deadlines.
Homework should only be academically focused.
Homework should be more fun.

I appear to have upset everyone!

On a serious point what do you want from homework?

OP posts:

And you are assuming that teachers don't because........you want to be even more insulting than you already have been? Confused

popadop · 27/10/2011 19:02

Where on this thread or any other thread have I said teachers don't have a heart?

This is getting like a popadop bashing now.

I'm off.

If I insult you by having an opinion that you don't agree with don't indulge me with answers and replies.

Feenie · 27/10/2011 19:06

Oh please - you have teacher bashed all the way through this thread, then changed tack with Teachers here should teacher there and then they would realise how well off they are.......one pencil between 20 kids.

Wrongly assuming that teachers here do not have a social conscience is not having an opinion that you don't agree with, it's just damn insulting. And way off the mark.

I wasn't questioning whether you have a heart popadop

You said "Teachers here should teacher there and then they would realise how well off they are.......one pencil between 20 kids."
I was asking if you had experience ...

I think homework can be a really powerful tool of communication between home and parents but unfortunately often they are just not target, so they become just a tick in the box.

More often than not my children get homework that are too easy and I do actually resent the time they have to spend doing it whilst they could be playing, winding down or doing something more constructive with their time.

We raised the lack of differentation with their teachers and were largely ignored. We therefore agreed that we will do our own homework based on the homework coming through, so in effect we will do our own differentiation.

I do think that at primary age, reading a good book or writing a good review or a story should be the only homework coming back but if there has to be homework differentation is key, otherwise it is just a waste of time.

I have experience of teaching in poverty stricken war torn countries.

Also we had to build the schools first.

popadop · 27/10/2011 19:34

But don't ask me anymore about it because I have been told off once for derailing the thread.

Homework is good and bad. it depends who sets it.

Feenie · 27/10/2011 19:36

No one told you off. Are you always this annoying sensitive?

StitchingMoss · 27/10/2011 20:23
