Mine does. Do not the schools receive information regarding which websites not to use?

I didnt actually mean thet I thought they would give the child 10 lashes, but it does mean it is harder to deal with any issues for your chilod with the teacher if you have had conflict in the past and you feel they are unnapproachable.

If anybody is speaking to the teachers/head, another bit of ammunition is that the Sparklebox toolbar which comes with the site is very easy to install and extremely difficult to get rid of. I'm not entirely sure whether this is due to malice aforethought (toolbars can be used to collect information or install malware) or just incompetent programming, but either way it's not something I'd want on any of the computers I'm responsible for.

mrz · 20/03/2011 09:21

One of the original reasons many LAs barred Sparklebox were over concerns about the toolbar which generates income for the site owner and is why Sparklebox was able to offer free resources.

Goblinchild · 20/03/2011 09:31

Sometimes having a stroppy and difficult parent generates a great deal of sympathy and tolerance for the child amongst staff.

FunkyGlassSlipper · 20/03/2011 10:47

Cant stay away Grin Fwiw. I'm actually quite a nice parent. Honestly :)

I'm feeling a bit ganged up on though, tbh, when all I wanted to know was the best way to bring this up with a HT who is not always receptive to (any) suggestions for improvement within the school, and who has been known to publicly retaliate when said suggestions have been made previously.

If I didnt express my self well, then fair enough, but you have all assumed the worst of me and I know your are helpful teachers on here, so it doesnt fill me with confidence that I'll be having a nice easy chat about this next week.

Can you see how a HT who often assumes suggestions are criticisms might take umbrage at the suggestion her school is supporting a paedophile?

Feenie · 20/03/2011 10:51

I think you are being a little over sensitive, tbh - I am sorry you feel ganged up on though. I think everyone was all for parents complaining - not one teacher here thinks that Sparklebox should be used. I would show her the report mrz posted if I were you, who cares if she doesn't like your suggestion - she can't possibly argue against it, it's indefensible.

Goblinchild · 20/03/2011 10:54

Gather some evidence from this thread and go in with it. If you go as an informed and concerned parent raising an issue, where's the problem?
I just found the suggestion that asking questions of a teacher would impact negatively on your child a bit off.

goodbyemrschips · 20/03/2011 12:26

What the hack is sparklebox....never heard of it....

Goblinchild · 20/03/2011 12:30

A website full of lovely printable resources for use in Primary school. Displays, printable games, word lists and mats...timesaving, useful and attractive.
Unfortunately there's a moral dilemma that some teachers and schools seem to ignore.

goodbyemrschips · 20/03/2011 12:37

so what is the connection with peadophiles?

Goblinchild · 20/03/2011 12:40

If you read this thread, the information was explained by mrz and her many links

Goodbye, the site is owned and was operated (until he went to prison for the 2nd time) by a twice convicted paedophile who is now probably out of prison and earning money every time somone downloads a resource from the website.

Funky this is the letter I used:

Dear Mrs. D

Whilst looking through E's bag this weekend at her homework I noticed that the times tables grid she has been given was downloaded from the Sparklebox website.

I am a little uncomfortable with this as the owner of the website Samuel Kinge, a former primary school teacher, was in January of this year (2010) convicted and imprisoned for the second time for child internet pornography offences. His first conviction in 2005 was under his previous name of Daniel Kinge (he changed his name by deed poll apparently in order to make it easier to continue offending).

Before his conviction there was concern that he was using the blog part of the website to access children and encourage teachers and parents to send in photographs. The site had something called a conduit toolbar which users downloaded and this generated income and tracked visits to websites. I am not entirely sure how it worked. However my current concern is the way in which google ads generates revenue for him. Revenue is earned not only from click-throughs to ads but every time a unique user views an ad. This means that simply visiting or downloading resources generates profit for the owner.

Additionally of course I feel very uncomfortable about a school and children distributing and displaying resources which bear the Sparklebox branding. Many local authorities have blocked the site although the reasons for this were not made public at first in case it hindered the police investigation and I know that many teachers are not aware of the true situation.

Yours sincerely

Elphaba Thropp

Had a look at the site but because of the owner don't feel right to use it.

mrz · 20/03/2011 18:19

every time you look at his site he earns money!

goodbyemrschips · 21/03/2011 08:04

I will not look at it again, although curious as I am, is there an alternative?

Macdog · 21/03/2011 12:30

Update:
Saw HT this morning - she says she was unaware of any problems with Sparklebox.

I have printed off the pages linked to earlier and taking them to her this afternoon as there is a 'cluster' meeting of all town school and she will make representation on my behalf there

Macdog · 22/03/2011 16:46

Still no response from HT.....

Parents Council meeting tomorrrow, might bring it up there

hmmmm........ Hmm

Macdog · 23/03/2011 12:42

Excellent result!!

Our LEA has blocked and firewalled sparklebox across whole area!!

HT passed on my file of downloaded information to LEA, they consulted their legal and IT teams, and block now in place.

Memo being circulated to all schools in next couple of days to inform them.

Many many thanks to everyone who provided me with information and links.
