Does your school use SparkleBox?

Mine does. Do not the schools receive information regarding which websites not to use?

elphabadefiesgravity he came out of prision following his first conviction in 2005 and set up sparklebox and used the income to fund his hobby including visits to an African orphanage (and inviting parents to send in photographs of their child's bedroom) ... so I'm not sure what your point is???

elphabadefiesgravity · 18/03/2011 12:15

my point was that he was convicted for the 2nd time last January for 12 months (I remember writing that in the letter to my children's headtacher last spring) so he must have been out and at large somewhere by now.

Who knows what he is doing and whether he has again managed to become involved with the website again.

I had some very useful help in explaining how the pay per click thing worked from here. The head thought I sounded very knowldgable (the power of mumsnet)!

mrz · 18/03/2011 16:49

He is still the recorded as a director and owner of the company so still profiting from visitors to the site.

Octavia09 · 18/03/2011 17:29

Mrz but how do you raise this question with the teacher or the HT? If the school is using the Sparklebox website it means they do not care who it has been created by. I understand from the posts that this is a well-known case and the teachers are well aware of Sparklebox. If my kid brings print outs with the logo should I ignore it or bin it? I actually feel disgusted to have it in my hands and the thought of my DC studying something from the website created/run by the paedophile makes me angry and sick.

I don't think all teachers are aware even though it has been much publicised in the press. As a teacher and mother I feel much the same as you when I see it in classes. I can only suggest approaching it by "are you aware of the background to this website?" next time your children bring something home...how do other parents feel?

hocuspontas · 18/03/2011 17:40

I noticed today that lots of Twinkl stuff was coming out of the printer. I'd like to know more about the company. Anyone?

mrz · 18/03/2011 17:49

IlsaLund · 18/03/2011 18:01

Sparklebox was banned in our LEA but the ban has now been removed and it is up to individuals if they use it.
Sadly I am the only teacher in the school who doesn't use it - I have made sure everyone is aware of why I don't use it, but I haven't managed to convince anyone else,

littleducks · 18/03/2011 18:20

As a parent i have also seen lots of twinkl stuff appearing at school. I would be far more impressed if it was 'twinkle'

Macdog · 18/03/2011 18:26

I wasn't aware of sparklebox until I read this thread tonight.
dd brought home some photocopied workseets with Sparklebox logo on it yesterday.
Will definitely raise this with her HeadTeacher on Monday

IlsaLund · 18/03/2011 18:46

Good for you Macdog - I would love it if parents raised this as a concern in the school I work in

FunkyGlassSlipper · 18/03/2011 19:07

I might check with the LEA to see if their position has changed before mentioning it to the teacher.

mrz · 18/03/2011 19:10

Does it matter what the LEA position is?

IlsaLund · 18/03/2011 19:21

mrz - that's exactly what I keep saying. The LEA stance shouldn't make it OK, but at the moment its like talking to the wall display

mrz · 18/03/2011 19:26

~IlsaLund sorry my question re LEA was to FunkyGlassSlipper ...

IlsaLund · 18/03/2011 19:28

That's Ok - I was just agreeing with you

FunkyGlassSlipper · 18/03/2011 20:04

Not really mrz but the teacher is more likely to listen to me if the LEA support the ban. They did previously so assuming the position has not changed it will just be a simpler conversation.

fwiw - I completely agree that use of the site is immoral.

mrz · 19/03/2011 11:17

As you have probably seen many teachers continued downloading Sparklebox at home to get around LA bans so I wouldn't rely on the power of a LA ban. Personally I think parents have far greater influence over what goes on in individual schools.

Goblinchild · 19/03/2011 11:23

I agree mrz, a couple of parents asking why will be more effective than yet another email from the LEA.

FunkyGlassSlipper · 19/03/2011 17:44

I do understand what your are saying but not all head/teachers are receptive to input from parents, and if you piss them off they still have to look after your children.

clam · 19/03/2011 17:54

Off-topic slightly, I know, but do people honestly believe that a HT, or class teacher for that matter, will really take it out on a child if they've had a run-in with the parent? Do you not think that the profession has moved on a bit from those days?

Goblinchild · 19/03/2011 18:01

No, we keep lists and make evil notes. Including details of the quality and number of Christmas gifts.
We only give special roles to our favourites, and only the naughty children are ever rewarded.
We also eat confiscated biscuits and steal items of clothing for our own children.

clam · 19/03/2011 18:25
Grin
FunkyGlassSlipper · 19/03/2011 20:57

oh fgs, dipping out now.

Having been on the wrong end of my HTs wrath, in public, for expressing an opinion about poor communication from the school before I am just being cautious. You can scoff all you like. I'll deal with the sparklebox issue without posting here.

clam · 20/03/2011 00:02

I'm not disputing that head teachers can be snippy with parents. And vice versa. My point is that they are not going to take it out on the child.
