Is this coat totally inappropriate

Ok, so I am probably sad getting my knickers in a twit aobut my DD School coat, but I have had my heart set on sending her to school in a duffle since she was born.

I have got her this

Im not sure wether to go with practical or get them both and be done with it, in which case should I get the blue hearts anorak so she can wear it outside school ( as in not a red coat for school)?

Please help me decide once and for all..

I would never buy a child a coat that couldn't be washed in the washing machine ,so the second one

basically one is a duffle and one is a fleece lined shower proof coat thats washable.

I know the answer, I guess but dont want to part with the image of sending her to school in a lovely smart duffle ..

I would also look that the coat has reflective stripes. it gets dark so early in the winter. just this extra little bit visibility...

The first one is nice but probably not that practical. DD is in Reception and she is supposed to have a waterproof one as they spend a lot of time outside. Also dry clean only would scare me!

The second one isn't as smart but is pretty and far more practical.

Get the duffle - in a few years she will refuse to wear one and you will have missed the window of opportunity.

I got DD a grey duffel from Boden last year for school, but she complained it wasn't very warm, and preferred to wear her Boden ski jacket.

The first is not practical for wet weather, although you should get it if you have had your heart set on it all these years! The second is better for school, easier to get on, zips are quicker to do (if they can't go out to play until they get their coats done up!). Remember it will probably end up in numerous puddles or stamped on with muddy feet in the cloakroom - better to have something you can chuck in the washing machine IMO!

Essential for winter But why don't they make them in nicer colours?

We got my boy one that looked ait like a Paddington bear coat and amazingly it still fits him 3 years on. So cute

I just bought a beautiful coat for dd, not a duffle (I think) but that kind of thing. Is teal colour and v Boden-esque (spotty lining) but was £16 from Sainsburys. Assumed it was practical, it's a coat . I chuck everything in the washing machine anyway. Though she does have a thin raincoat as well.

Oh and to do links you just put at the start then a word like duffle then on the end with no spaces so

becomes duffle when you take away the last space

Get the duffel coat!

They are waterproof enough, and most marks will sponge off. We all had them back when I was at infants' school, and they were just fine.

You can always get a v cheap cagoule for damp but warm autumn days, and add tabard/slapbands if worried about visibility.

Enjoy how she looks! You won't ever have this level of wardrobe control again.

Thanks, although I am still being flaky. I think I have to keep the duffle ( will the grey be ok for weekend wear too)?

I may just sod it and get the fleece lined one for rainy/drizzly days and then evalute each day?

Lynette- DD already has the yellow one from last year, the shininess this year is not particular attractive ( to me)

I am probably going to go with something from POP for my DS but they are just not girly enough for my DD, although cool and practical for boys

They are both nice for £56 for a child's coat, that you then have to pay to wash? Mumsnet = utter parallel universe to my own life sometimes.

Go for the fleece lined one...they are brilliant. Just chuck it in the washing machine after school and it's dry to wear the next morning.

Just snuck a look at dd's coat hanging in her wardrobe... it has two duffle buttons and a zip. And is truly beautiful and nicer than the Boden one. REally, I can't find a link but if you are considering £50 for a kid's coat then £16 would be semi-disposable anyway presumably.

I would as others say, never buy a school coat that cannot be washed.

DD is no different from my sons in that her coat needs to be washed at least once a month.

I have always found Mr Boden's ski jacket type coat fulfils the 3 Ws - warm, waterproof and washable. Good for passing on too, or resale at £££ in NCT sale or similar.

DD (looking over my shoulder ) says duffle coat, while she likes it, is too long to play and run around in.

She has one a bit like this but no fur round the hood.

DD already has the puffa coat thingy from Boden last year so that is still usable.

Do I need the fleece lined anorak too?

She does have a raincoat.... but its unlined.

Duffle coat plus raincoat describes my general approach to coat provision for my DD. She (and her coats) survived Reception and will be graduating to Y1.

If your DD owns a vest, warm jumper/cardigan and has a hat and gloves then the raincoat will be perfectly adequate for chilly, rainy days. Labelled (with your DD's name, not designer) wellies will also be necessary.

DD's school has a logoed coat which she wears for v. wet weather. But she also has the fleece lined Boden coat (last years one) which she wears a lot of the time. The Boden one is great as it's lightweight, but warm enough (DD hates anything too bulky as she is always on the move outside), it also washes well and dries quickly. DD hates the duffle coat, it went straight back - too stiff and itchy - apparently. Her best friend has one and it looks horribly bobbly and scruffy after a yr in reception.
